Gay Science is a series that asks the question “Why do the gays?” I take queer stereotypes and explain them scientifically with true 100% real science. In this episode of #GayScience we look at how Gaydar works.

"...and later all hooked up." is a very accurate description.

I lack Gaydar. I just assume everyone is gay until proven guilty.

I understand now. The child in 7th grade. He wasn’t just a moron. That was his mating call. He hadn’t matured enough to send vibrations through the ground.

It is something I call “ Character Resemblance Intuition”, or CRI. This a theory I have that states when you make friends, your subconscious is in control. It sees things that the naked eye doesn’t really notice, including different gestures, facial expressions, micro expressions, phrases, and certain aspects of the potential friend’s appearance and personality. The subconscious may be able to detect if you and your potential friend have shared interests, or recognize that the person has gone through similar traumas to what you’ve been through, just based on a few glances! It’s fascinating, really.
(Made this comment in a reply section but wanted to post it here too so everyone can see it! 😁)

Fun fact: gaydar is also how most LGBTQ+ kids find friends

My transgender brother has recently started meeting up with friends he had when he was younger, and it turns out they too were all transgender, but all came out as transgender after losing touch with each other. They all just kinda grouped together before they even knew, which is kinda weird...

As a recently found pan, it's very endearing to know that all my high school bffs are living their lgbt best as well

Ok but fr like 80% of the friends I made in elementary school have since come out and I was like "Oh thats so cool, Im straight but I have so many gay friends" Until I figured out I was queer and somehow we all just became friends with each other lmao

Wait I just realised something

My parents dragged me to church the other day and a girl who was speaking told a story somewhat along these lines;

So she and some of her younger family members where looking for this Christian girl who was going to teach them all more about the religion. They where in an airport and where looking for the Christian girl (they had never met her and didn’t know what she looked like) and the woman speaking said the two girls connected eyes and immediately knew they where who each other where looking for.

She then went on about how ‘gods children are just capable of connecting like that’ and blah blah blah.

Now idk about you but that just sounds like a gaydar to me

It is pretty crazy how that's like a thing people can detect. I immediately clocked a former roommate the second he walked through the door as we were all moving in. I mentioned it to my mother and she said she didn't see it. Well guess who was right? It then became immediately more obvious when he walked into the living room wearing a mesh shirt lol

My gaydar seems to be whoever seems cool and approachable. I don't think about whether they're gay, they just seem nice.
That's how all of my friends, even from elementary school turned out to be gay 😂

Amendment to what you said, it is not specific to gay people but it is very rare for a straight person like myself to have affective gaydar. I am an anomaly as it were, a straight person who acts super gay, paints his nails and has mostly female friends and is perfectly content with them just being friends. My gaydar is pretty strong.

Fun fact! The gaydar is a real thing. We actually release pheromones different from the heteros and we’re drawn to it! So yeah, gaydar exists.

No because my parents tried to guess if someone is gay and they’re usually off and it’s hilarious for me to see them argue who is right or not.

There was this person in my class looking at certain people and just going...
"Gay."
"Not cis."
And so I asked them, “What's everyone at this table? Gay or straight?"
They go
"Straight, bisexual, straight, and you? Gay and not cis."

I went to a friends house and the entire time she talked about gay people and her gaydar and the teachers she thinks are gay, but see I haven’t come out to her because I have up coming out I’d rather just answer truthfully when people ask because it makes my life easier, and she went “yeah no I have a pretty good gaydar” and I was there thinking “until you tell me you think I’m gay, I do not for one second believe you have a reliable gaydar because I am the most obvious gay person in living history based on the fact I go to an all girls school and compared to everyone else there I look wildly out of place. You absolutely have an god awful gaydar if you cannot tell if I am gay or not because everyone else looks me up and down and asks if I’m gay.”
