Every year when I go on vacation for the week, I send my friend the clip of Data telling Worf to tell spot "that he is a good kitty".

He always responds with "I will feed it".

I know this problem happened during TNG too, but I feel that since Spot had kittens, that has to cement her as a girl. You can't go back to saying "him" after that.

The TNG writers either f***ed up or just needed a female cat for the de-evolution episode and got lazy. Spot was a male in earlier episodes.

I don't believe that Spot was ever said to be an Earth cat. Maybe he/she is a space cat/rabbit thing like Ryo-Ohki.

The first two episodes Spot appeared in, he was portrayed by a pedigreed Somali. Thereafter, he has been portrayed by a handful of orange tabby American shorthairs. Due to their unique sex linked color trait, male orange tabbies outnumber female orange tabbies four to one because females must inherit two identical copies of the gene from both parents, while males only need one copy from their mother. Color blindness in humans works the same way. Color blindness in women only happens when both sides of their families carry the gene for it.

Spot was played by an angora in the first appearance and there were multiple times you could see a tom was used. Given certain things, one can assume he’s had multiple cats that he names “Spot”.

I think what happened is Spot died so Data transferred its memories into a posititronic brain then he brought it to the holodeck and let it choose its own gender.

I acquired a stray cat which i named Spot, after Data's. I believed Spot was a male for a quite a few years until a veterinarian told me she was a female.
