The quadrant test is used to assess for damage to the structured within the hip joint. This test can be painful and should be performed only by trained health practitioners as too vigorously apply this movement to an injured joint could worsen then injury.

A positive result in this test occurs when the patient's pain is reproduced or there is a significantly different response on one side to another. This test is not definitive and can still indicate merely soft tissue impingement in external joint structures. The application of stretching, massage and dry needling may assist is the problem is caused by impingment of tightnend and inflamed muscles.

However if there is any internal hip joint derangement it is likely that the patient will require referral on to a sports or orthopaedic specialist for MRI arthrogram. It is important to not that standard MRI have very poor sensitivity to internal hip joint derangement.
