Best Place in Each State for the Rich: Part 1 Alabama-Montana

Overview of great places to live in each state if you have a lot of money. This is part 1 where I cover the first half of the states alphabetically (Alabama-Montana). I look at places that are not just expensive, but also offer a great lifestyle that reflects the state in which it's located. These are not necessarily the most expensive or absolute wealthiest places in each state, but rather my personal opinion on the best place to live if you're rich.

I live in Chicago, and the BIG money that isn't in one of the major high rises downtown is in the North Shore suburbs from Evanston to Lake Forest. That's where you find the $5 mil and plus listings. And I was actually the photographer for one of your city of Chicago listings shown in the video, the house on Lundy St.

As someone who chose to move to California about 20 years ago and, more than likely, will live out the rest of my days here, I was racking my brain thinking of where you'd pick for CA considering all the options and the breadth and depth out here. But when you said Santa Barbara I thought "oh yes, of course" lol. It really is that nice.

The options for the super wealthy in CA are off the charts. Pacific Heights, Napa Valley, Atherton, Carmel/Pebble Beach, Beverly Hills, Malibu, La Jolla, Rancho Sante Fe and the list goes on. Your pick of Santa Barbara (incl Montecito, Hope Ranch) is just about perfect !

As a lifelong Minnesota resident I would have picked the area around Lake Minnetonka. Unremarkable houses go for well north of a million dollars just because they have some lakeshore on Minnetonka. And since Minnetonka is just west of the Twin Cities you can do the lake during the day and drive over to First Avenue for the evening. 😊

You sure made Traverse City Michigan look nice with the great pictures and fall colors. I've never been there but now I would consider visiting it. Massachusetts must have been a difficult state to choose from. There are so many diverse places that are each wonderful on their own merit. I imagine your choices for New York and New Jersey will also have been difficult as well. You really nailed it with your choice of Boothbay or Boothbay Harbor in Maine. I've vacationed there and found that to be a wonderful place to enjoy a slow pace and have some of the best fresh seafood on the entire East Coast of the US. Bravo Geography King!

I disagree slightly with the Illinois pick. While NE Chicago IS a very wealthy and nice part of the city, the real money is in the north shore suburbs like Evanston, Winnetka, Glencoe, Lake Forest etc.
I would say these are where you'd go if you had infinite money because you have beaches there too that are less busy than the city, plus one of metra's best lines goes through those suburbs so you have easy access to the city. Your choice wasn't wrong per se, but as a Chicago native I would say those suburbs are where it's at if you're rich!
Anyway awesome video, love your content! Keep it up King!!!

Wow! In the Maryland section you showed a home on Harness Creek Road. I was born and raised in Harness Creek. Where this house is was a large tobacco farm when I grew up. It was a great place to be as a kid. South River on one side, Harness Creek on the other, and the Chesapeake at the far end. Great memories.

One element I think you have to factor in here is access to state-of-the-art health care. Most rich people are, after all, not young and they do have families and hangers-on who will need advanced treatment that has to be done at a top facility and living in a remote, bucolic locale is a serious liability when considering the innumerable trips for doctors appointments when you get older.

Mentone, AL is an incredible spot. Little known, but a wonderful little town. Close to multiple state parks with waterfalls and canyons. Great choice 🤙🏻

As a Michigan native, I’m glad you picked Traverse City over one of those Detroit suburbs. I myself would buy a large home in the UP if I was rich and living in Michigan. I may even consider the top part of The Thumb for its closer proximity to more restaurants, stores, and Canada.

Well done, didn't always agree with your selections, but definitely appreciate your perspective that takes into consideration the ethos of the state.

Hey Kyle—super fun video as always! I enjoy your ideas as I’m only a Westerner…. I would have chosen Flagstaff for Arizona and Telluride or Crested Butte for Colorado and for Alaska it would probably have been Sitka … just more ideas! Thanks for doing your research for all of us 😊

Our family spent the 4th of July weekend in Blue Ridge Ga. this year. We will definitely go back . Kinda like Mayberry with craft beer.

McCall Idaho is beautiful, and expensive. However, it is super-isolated and brutally cold in the winter. Highway 55 closes a lot due to landslides and whatnot, and it’s the only way in and out. The real money in Idaho is in Sun Valley/Ketchum. Plus, Hailey is just 8 miles away and may be the smallest city in the US (8000 population) with regular scheduled commercial airline flights.

Another great video. I'm gonna say Bentonville for my home state. Where the Waltons live is pretty rich. Hot Springs has many more poor people around.

For Florida I think I’d go with Naples instead, although golden beach is a good choice too. Naples as a whole just feels richer as a whole since it’s not right next to some not so nice areas in Miami and isn’t just a rich area of a bigger city, it’s own thing. (Could maybe consider it a suburb of Fort Myers but I would say they’re separate).

Montana here, I’d say the best place for the rich and wealthy is Ravalli County. From what I’m seeing, the Bitterroot valley area has been attracting a lot of wealthy folks due to the proximity to the Bitterroot mountains which makes up the longest sub range of the Rocky Mountains. The scenery is impeccable, and it’s warmer in the Bitterroot Valley than other parts of Montana. Helena is scenic, but not as scenic as the Bitterroot area. There are a lot of hiking, fishing, hunting, biking, backcountry skiing in the Bitterroot. Lost Trail ski resort is also nearby for winter sport enthusiasts.
