What is a City-State?

In which Jeremy Corwin discusses what a city-state is and uses examples from Greece, Mesopotamia, Rome, and the Vatican. He also explains why his hometown of Portland, Oregon is not a city-state.

The explanation through decision making is very well thought of. I'm making a small research about city states, because I want to plan my Cities Skylines city into an independent city state, while talking about politics. But I noticed that the younger generation in my country (Syria) lacks some political knowledge (For obvious reasons though) 😢

Pretty straight foward. The term "states" outside of the US would refer to a whole country. So USA, France, China, Germany, Ghana are all states. What other countries call provinces, in America we say "states". Which makes sense considering prior to the constitution, the individual colonies acted largely as its own country united by a weak federal government.

City states were pretty much "City Countries" probably an easier way to look at it for Americans. City states were pretty much the precursor to much larger states to be formed.

If I had a choice I would live in Athens. True Democracy, The US should limit representational democracy and send people from the poorest areas to be represented first. IMO

You spoke about Washington DC briefly; this is also a city state and interestingly enough so is London (England)
