Butter Toffee Candy

2 sticks butter
3 Tablespoons water
1 cup sugar
3 Hershey bars

Place butter, water, and sugar in a heavy saucepan. Cook over medium heat until thick and a deep copper color; about the color of an old penny.

Pour onto a parchment paper lined, or well buttered, cookie sheet.

Break up Hershey bars and place on top of hot candy. Allow chocolate to melt. (I turn another cookie sheet upside down to cover the candy.) Spread the melted chocolate over the toffee.

Place in the refrigerator until candy cools and chocolate is hardened. Break into pieces.

This is the exact recipe how my 96 year old Aunt ( R.I.P.) used to to make. The only difference was she put nuts on the top. I have to tell you, she never timed her cooking process. I asked her how long do you cook it. She said it was done when you see the first puff of smoke, then immediately take it off the burner. This never fails. Every time I make it I think of her and miss her.❤

I miss my parents always but more so this time of year. My father would ask me to always put up their tree and decorate it. 🎄He would tell me how to do things while in his recliner. My mother loved to cook and bake. She would make at least 7 large trays of lasagna for Christmas Day. I love you always mom & dad. 🙂🦋❤️

Another surefire gauge for toffee doneness is an ordinary brown paper grocery bag. Keep it nearby - but not too near the heat - and when the candy has cooked to the point that it’s the same color as the bag, it’s done and ready to pour out. Works every time!

This is the 1st time I've come across your videos & I love it! I've made my own toffee before, (using my own recipe), and I have a suggestion for you - just before you pour the toffee on the cookie sheet, turn the fire off & quickly stir in 1 cup of chopped pecans. Then proceed as usual. It'll make a huge, and delicious, difference!

Made it today for the first time Tom, the only change I had to make was I used dark chocolate, as we did not have milk chocolate in house…it is still cooling, so I’m not sure what it will taste like compared to milk chocolate…thanks Tom 👏👏👏🟦

My mother always used an iron skillet because it distributes and holds the heat. The trickiest thing about this candy is knowing when it is browned enough, not too much and not enough. But with practice, I found I could get it just right. My mother always used chocolate chips and sprinkled crushed almonds over the chocolate. My FAVORITE candy!! Yum!! We only make this for Christmas. It’s such a treat. Thanks for sharing this video. It brings back childhood memories.

I'm going to try making this and really appreciate that a candy thermometer isn't needed. This candy is one of my favorites!! Thank you for sharing. 🎄🌟

I remember making this as a freshman in high school in Home Ec class in 1966. I think our recipe came from either Better Homes and Gardens or Betty Crocker cookbooks. We used a candy thermometer to bring it to desired temperature (didn't go by color). My family loved it. I made it for several years until my sister and I joined Weight Watchers and convinced our parents to follow the program, too. The was the end of my candy making. Now that I'm diabetic, I doubt I'll be making this but may enjoy a SMALL piece if it happens to be at the family Christmas do. :)

I love how you demonstrate simply and slowly, showing all the steps clearly. Everything is well organized and easy to follow. I’m not particularly comfortable in the kitchen, but I’m going to try this! Thank you.
