In my opinion one important factor is that each steeping is getting hit with the appropriate temperature water each time with minimal temperature drop over a 3 minute Western steeping for example.

Here's some tea math. 4oz is almost exactly 100ml. If you have a tea session with a vessel around this size and the tea that steaps 7 times or more you've had almost an entire wine bottle, or close to one liter of tea. Depending on the tea this would at most cost me 2 dollars for one session.

But at the same time that means it ruined mediocre tea that I used to be able to drink.

You should switch, so you use more tea. A great trick, like the old opium trick we did in the past. Gongfu turns you from a casual drinker into an addict. Gotta make that next tiny brew asap! Quick pour water in before the temp drops. Before you know it you have consumed 6g in the same time you would usually have only had 2g. It's like going from snorting to smoking a rock and I'm not talking about a rock oolong. Next thing you know you're in tea anonymous, talking about how you were waiting by a cash machine with a tea knife.
