what they say: "we're gonna get rid of toxicity!"
what they mean: "we're gonna buy a cheap AI to check the voice chat and make sure nobody's saying no-no words. its going to fail miserably with tons of false positives and we're gonna catch a lot of flak from the playerbase, if they dont leave completely."

Riot taking a stance on toxicity is the height of irony

I'm hoping the Bioshock movie will be a prequel showing the rising tensions in Rapture between Fontaine and Ryan, all culminating in the New Years party where all hell breaks loose. I think that story would be much easier to convert into a decent flick than trying to make the campaign into a movie. Not saying the campaign couldn't be done, it'd just be harder to pull off. Plus everyone already knows the Would You Kindly twist which was easily the most moment of the game and would be for a movie too...had we not already played the game. :P

The whole idea about banning someone from everything because they were toxic in one place, is a super dangerous idea. That kind of mentality eventually leads to a social credit score, where every time you have a bad day or possibly even a bad game, your social credit drops. Until eventually you are banned from online gaming.

Toxicity in games, from my experience, largely comes from competitive, and challenging group focused game play.

~reads title, bursts out in raucous laughter~ How are they not choking on the irony?! And how do they intend to train AI to recognize toxicity when they can't see what is toxic around them. Also, does anyone know what happened to that person Riot hired that was supposed to 'clean up' their workplace culture? The one that bragged on Twitter about how they were going to change things and how it was a good thing Riot was doing this.

I'm not hopeful for Bioshock. It'll either be some hack job adaptation of the game where the scriptwriters figuratively rubbed the plot and characters over their crotch to get their stink on it and thus will be barely recognizable OR they'll make a prequel that I'm just not interested in.

Talking about increasing ban scalability before getting the accuracy and quality under control seems like putting the cart before the horse.

I know they said their solution to that is increased AI tech but I think we’ve proved it out that we’re not ready to take our hands completely off the wheel and let robots dictate things. Both figuratively and literally.

I forget sometimes that companies are made up by a group of people. So we end up with those who will do their best to promote good values working alongside those who can’t be trusted near an open drink…

The other issue I saw raised when Riot first talked about their AI ban-bot is that all the talk of removing "disruptors" instead of, say, "racists and homophobes", means it feels inevitable this is expanded to curb political opinions they find disagreeable, particularly with Riot being wholly owned by Tencent.

I have seen your bioshock infinite playthough too many times, its something i love having on in the background. That series ends every episode with the little animation of jessie on a parade float (if i remember right) and is all about the year of a million subs.
So hearing you talk about bioshock AND trying to get to a million subs really takes me back :)
but i swear to god if you dont get a million subs before christmas im gonna do it my fucking self

The most powerful anti-toxic gamer tool has always been the mute/block button. People should use it more instead of engaging.

The issue with Bioshock is it was carried on three major things the stellar voice actors, ambiance (music and sounds) and the fantastic story. Part of what made the story so good was it’s unwillingness to shy away from the true horror of the city and world building. That is very hard to do if you are trying to go for a specific rating which a lot of companies do as well as just coming from a overall solely visual perspective. I mean I can still remember the voice of Andrew Ryan, Atlas, Sander Cohen, Tenenbaum and even the splicers. I just haven’t seen many bring that level of emotion to a performance in recent years. It is very big shoes to fill so I have very low hopes for the show but who knows I hope I get surprised.

Oh yeah, ban a person from everything cause they got banned in one place. Yeah I can't see that being an issue.

As much as I agree with dealing with toxicity in video games, what this sounds to me is more data gathering that we cannot opt out of, eventual restriction of freedom of speech, decrease in internet anonymity, basically everything against what the internet is.
Imagine playing a riot game like league, getting banned by AI for something that may or may not be worth a ban, and then they double down and just ban you from all riot products, like singleplayer stuff where toxicity doesn't matter, yeah that can't possibly go wrong.
