This is why everyone should ride the Canoes

I worked as a cast member at Disneyland from 2010 to 2012 and I remember there was such a huge focus on guest experience. I feel like the customer service was drilled into us. It wasn’t even called customer service. It was called the Disney way, and we had the Disney four keys and everything to guide us… Flash forward to 2019 i took my then boyfriend now husband to Disneyland for the first time because he is from the Midwest and I couldn’t believe the lack of “Disney Way” in the park!! I wanted to get him a first visit pin so I took him to City Hall all excited and they told me oh there’s a self-serve cart outside. You can do it yourself… I was in shock! It was so crazy then I went back again just in 2023 and was absolutely floored that fast passes weren’t free anymore! I did get the genie plus plan because I hate waiting in line. But that was absolutely insane! So sad how the quality of customer serving has gone down with prices just increasing!!!

And another thought, if you need to pay $400 for the Super pass, and the cost of regular admission, and divide that cost by 8.5, that means that you're paying $61.76 PER RIDE for the park. I think EVERYONE can agree that when put that way, it is EXCESSIVE for rides that generally last less than 3 minutes per ride. I think Disney needs to re-think this.

So, basically Disney is sacrificing customer service for regular guests and instead focusing on better service for those who can afford to pay more. My family and I are passholders and love the park, but every time I go to Disneyland these days I can't help but think that Walt would be very upset by the decreased emphasis on customer service and the diminished park experience. Thanks, as always, Chris.

The 1/2 ride is because you get half with your rise resistance and it breaks down

Today I learned that the average of 7 and 9 is no longer 8.

It would appear, since the pandemic, Disney truly only cares about the money. And this is just so beyond heartbreaking. I know so many of us have had so many truly magical experiences at the parks and wonderful memories and I think we keep going back to try and feel that again, but the truth is, it's just not there anymore. And until they start losing money, Disney is just going to keep taking away experiences and adding to the prices. Chris, I really appreciate this reporting. I have been going annually to Disneyland for 20 years now and while I still consider it my happy place, I won't be able to continue at this pace with the price increases. I know your channel is such a positive one and I always appreciate you practicing that and I know you guys have loads of gratitude for what you've been able to experience and accomplish, but you must be noticing a lot of this too. Thanks for all the reporting and hard work you do. Love to you all.

I was a Disney travel planner and never heard about this rule. Nowadays, we're lucky to get 4 rides in per day. I'm not even sure Hollywood studios has 8.5 rides.

My biggest gripe is the paid for genie. We have a large family, and we are long--long time Disney fanatics. So paying for genie is a big add. My husband is categorically opposed to it, so we try to manage without and it's becoming more and more frustrating . We go mostly for the rides and expect to do most of them. Just returned from a 4 day trip. To go on most rides without a significant wait, we did 16 hour days twice and utilized any and all single rider lines. We did ride everything we wanted and some things more than once, but wow, standing in the standby lines and watching the flood of lightning lane people pass without anyone from the regular line going was so demoralizing. I would love to know what the actual ratio is for the major rides and how it fluctuates. Another thing we noticed was the large number of groups accompanied by a concierge that walked right on the rides. Never noticed these before. My understanding is those cost 800 dollars an hour? I would love to see a video on that. Disney is starting to feel like a system of classes of guests and that is sad.

I’m glad you put this one out, other Disneyland YouTubers just glaze all over Disney. And they seldom criticize the gross display of greed at guests’ expense at the parks right now.

We went to Disneyland near Halloween in the middle of the week. I haven’t been for about 20 years. It’s really changed. It’s ridiculously expensive, crowded, the waits are insane, and the whole park is kind of dirty and shabby. Truly, the end of an era.

Chris,

Writing as a father of a former CM, if they work foods on Main Street, they leave a lot later than park closing. My daughter worked Gibson Girl, and sometimes didn't leave the park until after 1:30AM. Being she was a student at Cal State, Fullerton, I wasn't too comfortable. She later transferred to rides in NOS/CC and worked Pooh, Pirates, Mansion and Splash. Benefit was, when her shift ended she could head straight to K-lot.

Now, being one that's gone to Disneyland since 1966, and a Magic Key Holder now, this new system of "pay to ride" is gross. My parents were not rich in 1966 and the park was affordable then. Heck, the first time my wife and I took our daughter (who became a CM) as an infant in 1989, the park was affordable. But now? My wife and I are lucky to get three rides in and at almost $3K for 2 Magic Keys, coming close to not worth it.

We had magic pass reservations this past Wednesday and woke up to 100mph winds, no electricity, no heat, no hot water. Couldn’t get cars out of garage etc. we were minimally affected compared to the poor people in Los Angeles. That being said, I contacted Disney to cancel reservations due to Mother Nature and extreme weather. They said sorry, no exceptions to our no same day cancellations! What about if our house had been on fire? Sorry no exceptions to same day cancellations? Unbelievable. Rethinking Disney right now.
Update, I wonder if alot of people complained about this because I got a message that a cast member reviewed my request and conversation and our black mark was removed. 🤔

I have worked WaterWorld for 29 years. We've been told this for years - guests who see the show rate their entire day higher. Never heard of the 8 1/2 ride rule at Disney but it makes sense. Thank you for this. Disney really is for the wealthy now.

As a person that when I go to the parks, I do it because my wife loves them, and Disney. It is clear that Disney is focused on profits, and increasing prices for tickets, food, merchandise. And to have a good to great experience, you have to up-purchase these other services. I remember many years ago, seeing only a few VIP groups (the groups of people being brought around the park, by a park employee in a special uniform), but when we went to disneyland last year, you saw a VIP group about once an hour. Disney is recording record profits, and until people stop paying the high $$ for these extras, the prices will continue to go up. We are a free market economy, and as long as the customers pay, disney is going to charge.

This is why we didn't renew our annual passes. Once they took Fast Pass away, I knew we'd be screwed. It hasn't been the same, unless you are rich.

First, I want to say how much my family loves your channel! Thank you for all the hard work—it’s been both entertaining and informative. We visited Disneyland on January 2nd, 2025, and, because of the limited time we had at the park, I surprised my family with Genuine Plus. We had 6 hours and managed to ride 10 rides—it was fantastic! We basically walked onto the rides. I understand it’s expensive, but that day, most of the rides we wanted to experience had 90-minute waits.

To answer your question: yes, we would have been disappointed if we had only managed 4 rides. For us, it was worth it. Lastly, I want to mention that Getaway Today is an awesome service. Happy New Year! Cheers!

I am not rich and that is who Disney caters to now. My first visit was in 1965, and I have a visit planned for next month. 60 years of visiting "The Happiest Place on Earth." This could very well be my last visit. I can't justify spending that much money to be stressed and frustrated by not "getting my money's worth." I kept thinking the crowds would die down with all the price increases, but it just keeps getting busier. Yes, I was aware of the 8 1/2 ride rule. I was also aware that on my last 2 visits, it didn't happen.
