"Elon Musk's dad has said he isn't proud of his billionaire son alone because the whole Musk family has done "a lot of things for a long time.”

In a wide-ranging 20-minute interview on Australia's "The Kyle and Jackie O Show," Errol Musk spoke about Elon and the rest of the Musk family, including Elon's younger brother, Kimbal.

Asked whether he was proud of Elon, 76-year-old Errol said: "No, well, you know, I mean, we are a family that have been doing a lot of things for a long time. It's not as though we suddenly started doing something."

In wealthy narcissistic families, the competition, even between a parent and child, is UNBELIEVABLE to people who haven't experienced it, or been in proximity to it

Goes both ways. I don't think Elon is proud of his dad either. They deserve each other.

I'm not a fan of Elon Musk, however this was disturbing and heartbreaking to hear. Suddenly a lot of Musk's behaviors make sense. They are still unjustifiable, but now I get it.

Working in tech, I had friends working directly with Elon on a daily basis at the nascent stages of one of his highly successful companies. Despite being incredinly talented and hard-working engineers, they were always overworked, depressed, and one of them ended up legit suicidal and had to quit it all (that was another highly successful company, in a field that graduates a very limited number of these very specific engineers across the world and it's not like the company had all these other options if the friend were to quit in the midst of a project. I was seriously worried for him but we were not that close and he was under the toxic Elon spell of "toughen up, you are man, you are not supposed to show your feelings and emotions." From their stories of that toxic environment, I started suspecting Elon legit had some sort of daddy issues in a sense that he grew up in an abusive environment where for his father he was "never good enough" and hence he inadvertedly immitated that toxic upbrinning in his own companies (and it was more obvious at a nascent level of his business, when he couldn't easily hide behind the many PR agents and lawyers to preserve his image or distance his own demons from other innocent people).

What Jessica suggests is basically very close to the truth-the reason Elon is this way is likely, to a huge extent, to his dismissive, toxic, narcissistic and sadistic father (or the entire family, really). HIs own mom is still publically seeking validation and she is in her 80's or so.

Um, isn't Daddy Musk accused of working for South Africa's apartheid regime? Or is that Lara Logan's dad?

I had a friend after college, and her mom was a prominent shrink on the East coast. Some of her patients were extremely wealthy, or the family members of business titans. Naturally, no names were ever mentioned, but there can be some real darkness in those old money families. Having millions/billions doesn't always lead to wholesome family relationships.

This is actually the most realistic thing I've seen about Musk. A lot of times rich people who come from family wealth come from extremely toxic parents.

I try to rationalize NOT defending Elon when possible, but hearing how grotesque his father seems, I actually have a little sympathy for him. Like a pinch.

No, it's not normal to marry your step daughter or have kids with her even if Woody did it.

I grew up in South Africa during apartheid. And it is a choice to be a despicable person. I am sure Elon and his dad could afford therapy and they could choose a different path. They haven't, and it is on them; and not on all South Africans. In fact being so directly faced with our past has made me and many of my friends look more closely at our ourselves and be forced to make a conscious choice.

His dad is terrible and he’s terrible. Being rich as hell means nothing for character. actually it typically means Terrible character

What is it with these billionaires and their daddy issues. No wonder he thinks that he's Tony Stark.

Almost every tyrant in history has documented father-son trauma, mostly related to competition and jealousy.

Learning about Elon's father makes everything about Elon make so much more sense. Especially the creepy womanizing stuff.

Disgusting. The step daughter was in a vulnerable position and he took advantage of that and their imbalanced power dynamic to start a relationship with her??? Gross

As an Aussie - just an confirming that Kyle & Jackie O are our highest rating ‘Shock Jocks’ or Right Wing jocks. But to put them into an American context - while they do do some deplorable stunts and interviews etc, they still have some salvageable views on some topics like Marriage Equality etc.

American shock jocks are on another level & really should be put in jail for inciting violence.

It’s been heartbreaking to watch America’s descent into absolute madness. I will miss travelling to visit my close friends there. I have travelled to the US at least a dozen times in my lifetime and will never go again as I fear being shot at & discriminated against as a queer person & woman.

You should really do a story about what nobody is talking about in the US - the obvious impending doom of your travel industry/ travel economy.
