BUtterfield 8 by John O'Hara // Book Review

This book follows a couple very busy months in the life of Gloria Wandrous, an 18yr old socialite living in NYC in the 1930s. Part coming of age, part tragedy, all Roaring 30s grandeur!

Jo, thank you so much for your review! I haven't read a single book by John O'Hara yet, but for some reason I have his "The Lockwood Concern" in my TBR (and I guess it's been there for ages). A couple of months back I've been browsing through Penguin Drop Caps collection and "BUtterfield 8" was my choice. Don't have it yet, but after your review I think I start to read O'Hara from this book.

Gloria Wandrous has an evocative name much like Pussy Galore. I did enjoy the book and agree with the reviewer. I think though women/girls will like Butterfield 8 better than fellows will. Just my opinion. I much preferred Appointment in Samarra. Try 'Pal Joey' for something really different in writing style by O'Hara.

The Lockwood Concern was my favorite-JOH was certainly the greatest short story writer of his time-

Great review! Didn't know at all what this book was about but this definitely moved it up on my Drop Caps wishlist! :)

That is a wild setup to a story. Why can't we have nice classic editions like that for SFF books. I'd love to have books like that on my shelf.

I adored Breakfast at Tiffany's, and have been admiring this copy of Butterfield 8 for a while.  Just might cave in and buy it ;-D

I've been looking at this book and in the Penguin Caps edition.  It will be my first Penguin Caps and I'm so afraid I will become addicted to them. hahaha  I'm thinking that there was a movie by the name Butterfield 8.  It would be an old movie.  If you didn't know about the movie...check it out!!  :)  In the mean time I'm going to put this edition in my shopping basket!!  Thank you!! x

I just read BUtterfield 8 and I really disliked it. It was a mess of a book, in my opinion. I feel it would have been better had it either been much shorter or much longer. I have been curious about Appointment for a year or so but after how much I disliked BU8, I’m not sure I should bother with the other. :(
