'I despise "Mill on the Floss" with my soul.' Bloody hell! Still, I guess either loving or hating a book is better than a 'meh' 😀 Great videos, thank you for your hard work - my TBR has grown substantially and we're only Gaskell!

I'll definitely be coming back to these in the future when I've gotten through a little bit more of my tbr... because I just want to add all of these to my list!

I've heard of Arthur Conan Doyle, but the rest of them were all new to me. That's the way I figured this whole series would be - me not knowing anything. But it's fun to see so many authors of a period, and it's a nice surprise to see so many women aurthors.

Can safely say you like Elizabeth Gaskell then! 😂 I have never read anything by her so clearly I need to put this right. I am a fan of George Eliot though. I’m loving this series so much. What an amazing amount of work you have put into the project-thank you so much.

One thing I learned reading Arthur Conan Doyle's memories is he's at the origin of the life buoy invention ! Many, many years ago, I read his Brigadier Gérard series, the While company, the Professor Challenger and also Under the red lamp and loved them. I'll get back to them sometime in the future. I also remember a short story about a newlywed couple that was both adorable and so very funny (Beyond the city is the title, I guess, read it in French). I also adore Elizabeth Gaskell 💜

Thank you for all the work you put into making this series. I will watch this again and again. I also love Elizabeth Gaskell and this year I have read North and South and Wives and Daughters back to back. I found the tone of Wives and Daughters more dark and sombre, but I was surprised to find that, in the end, I loved it more than North and South. I think it is due to the character of Squire Hamley, which I think is an extremely well written character. I really understood him and my heart broke for people like him who struggle to say the things that matter and suffer in relationships as a consequence of it. I think Gaskell touched upon a significant truth there, that is as relevant today as it was in her time. I would like to hear your thoughts on this.

Thank you for so many recommandations! I would like to try Amy Dillwyn, probably with A Burglary first as you suggest. And I’ve had Sybil on my shelves for a long time, I should really get to it.

Recently finished James' Portrait of A Lady and upon reflection I find it surprising how different his heroine, Isabel Archer, is from Doyle's great lady, Irene Adler, from a Scandal in Bohemia. Without trying to present a hypothesis for a dissertation, it seems to me both men wanted to create a very special, if not an ideal woman (according ofc to their own stds.), and each arrived at a very different destination.

Well done Katie - you're rattling through them. Talking of the curse of Sherlock Holmes, it's just occurred to me that there's a weak but arguable case for including John Buchan in this series, since he already had a handful of novels to his name by 1901. Like Doyle he felt that he was best known for his least consequential work; unlike Doyle he was right.

I liked Silas Marner and The Mill on the Floss, loathed Muddlemarch (twice). I loved Gaskell's Wives and Daughters. I felt they had no need for the final two chapters. The book could have ended nicely with the comment of the nasty piece of work stepmother. I have liked all the Gaskell's books that I have read so far, except Ruth and I now think she intended for people not to like it. I read all the Sherlock Holmes in the early nineteen-seventies and for some reason, it became fashionable to decorate tobacco shops in malls with Sherlockian themes. It must have been the pipe. I framed an old 1880s map of London to add some Sherlock to my decor.

Wasn't Dixie dead by the time of the First World War if she lived from 1855-1905? Her journalistic account of WW1 must have been entertaining. Perhaps she was a Boer War correspondent?

I loved Middlemarch and Silas Marner . I did not like Mill on the floss . Though I like her writing style .
