I have always been butch/lipstick and that was a very interesting experience growing up in a rural town with a population of under 400 people. The few gays in my area would ask why I dress like a boy and a girl, but its just because I like it and it feels like myself. It was different in 2004. I was androgynous, still am at the age of 36.
