Culturedog Sam Hatch recently had the chance to review a Blu-Ray copy of Josh and Benny Safdie’s newest film Uncut Gems - a bleak, gut-wrenching character study of Howard Ratner, a New York jeweler with a serious gambling monkey on his back. Is it a worthy purchase, or should you opt for a jewel-encrusted Furby instead? Sam's here to help you make that decision!

Listen to "Culture Dogs" Sunday nights at 8pm EST on WWUH, 91.3 FM in CT. Also streaming live (and then archived via StreamRewind) on:

WNPR:

Intro music: "Anger Mgmt." by Sever the Drama.

I was extremely disappointed to find out there wasn’t a physical 4K release of this but the regular Blu ray did look incredible so I wasn’t too mad about it. Apparently there’s a digital 4K version on iTunes and it even has a director commentary, I don’t see why that couldn’t have been carried over to the Blu ray.

This film does sound very promising. I've even heard other folks make comments that half the time you don't even think its Adam Sandler playing this character, you literally believe that it is Howard Ratner. We have had a certain image of Adam Sandler for so long with his comedies that when he does make that one film where he gets to express his acting chops, it kind of feels out of the blue in a way. So I am looking forward to seeing it. Can I ask, what were your thoughts on Punch Drunk Love? Because that tends to be the other Adam Sandler movie that movie fans rank the highest, and yet I have never seen it.

Saw it on netflix, but stopped after 40 minutes. Not my movie. Too wired for my taste.
