Why Euro Nymphing is Really Awesome // ESN Quick Tip

Euro nymphing doesn't suck. It's awesome and it's time for you to get into this, get good at it, and have success on foot without having to kill yourself fishing big heavy bobbers. It's fun, rewarding, effective, and clean. This technique can give anglers a competitive advantage over boat anglers, guided anglers, and is the "great equalizer" on public water featuring well educated trout.

Picked it up last year. Life changing. I can’t cast my euro rig without now saying “lift, drop and follow” nothing better than a tight line hook up on a super sensitive tip.

Picked up an Echo Shadow X from you guys a couple of weeks ago and went out for my first time Euro nymphing this past weekend, I’ve never had so much success trout fishing despite it being my first time ever using the technique. It’s not something taboo and excessively intricate. I think lots of people don’t get into it, because it intimidates them but it’s quite simple and definitely effective. I’m hooked on it for life!

Couldn't agree more with you. I took the plunge during covid now I tie my own nymphs and spent money on quality gear now I am totally addicted. Thanks for all your vids and info!

Been hooked since last weeK! Thanks for the videos. My very FIRST Fly trout ever were 20" and 24" THICK Rainbows in North Georgia oon War Woman Creek by Euro-Nymphing

Joe, you’re so right. Here in the UK it’s an essential tool when the fish are picky or nailed to the bottom. I’ve also used the technique with huge success on Cutthroat in Canada. Transformational! BTW your videos are great, you’re a long way from me here in England but I hope to visit Red’s Fly Shop one day and fish your water. Tight lines, Philip.

Wife bought me an Orvis Recon 3wt for Christmas. Haven’t got it wet yet, but trout season is just getting started here in the Midwest.

Couldn’t agree more. An amazing technique that requires a lot of skill and feel. Tight lines from Munich! Admir

Joe, totally agree and I've had a lot of success with the ESN. Question about: "The tug is the drug." Devin and others would suggest if you've felt the fish take your bug you were already too late, or that you missed some indication. What's your take (pun)? I would think 75% of the fish I catch I feel.

I "made" my own euro rod last spring by replacing the tip section on a 4 piece five weight with the tip section from a 2 piece four wt. I bought some tungsten nymphs, made some leaders with sighter sections and started catching fish immediately. This Spring I upgraded to a real euro rod (the Echo Shadow II) from Red's and I love it. A great way to fish.

Euro Nymphing seemed kind of mysterious and highly technical to me at first. I picked up a setup and had some challenges. But then I realized that euro Nymphing is really just an optimized version, with specifically designed rod and leader, of old fashion high stock Nymphing without an indicator (think about Joe Humphreys style of Nymphing). When I realized this and started fishing those same ole techniques it just started to click for me. I went from basically just tight lining right below my rod tip to being fully effective at range and in complex currents. The only big differences between euro nymphing and high stick Nymphing are the casting technique and the gear.

HATED traditional nymph fishing. The split shot, indicators, etc. (And I'm old enough to say that while I love dry fly fishing, I'm bad at it.). He's absolutely right. Bought a rig and went euro nymphing for the FIRST TIME last weekend. Caught five fish my first time out in about a two hour time span. I still have a ton to learn, but it re-energized my love of using a fly rod. I was about to give up.

Joe, as someone who has watched all of your videos and picked up a Euro setup last year, I have a question. I've had moderate success and understand the basic concepts. What route would you suggest to get the best bang-for-my-buck instruction? The 'Intro" course, the fishalong, or a guided trip? Thanks for all of the content, and great fish at the start of the vid!

Live in Midwest and only get to go trout fish about 5-8 days a year. Is it something that I should be able pick up relatively quickly? It seems like something that couldn’t be practiced in Kansas.

Great content and video!! Does anyone have a tip on keeping the line from sticking to the rod when it’s wet and raining ? I use the line wrapping technique of putty some line spiraled around the rod to help keep the line from sticking to the rod blank but was wondering if anyone had other tips to keep ones line from sticking to the rod when it’s raining. Any info will be appreciated!!!!

I know I'm asking for h8ters here, but BEFORE I learned to fly fish, I would tie small marabou jigs on my 7' pack spinning rod and tight line nymph (or cast and keep a tight line through the end of a riffle / rapids). I caught a lot of fish and yes, it's super effective; euro-nymphing is literally how competitive fishing is done around the world. So, I guess I'm in the minority that says it's fly fishing only if fly line is casting the fly. Yes, this still fishing and Joe makes SUPER videos, but if I want to tight line nymph, I've got a pack rod that just needs new line and maybe the dust cleaned off. ☮

Bobbers are for toddlers and euro nymphing is the only way to nymph. Being able to see and feel the strikes makes it so much more successful and enjoyable.
