Proceed With Caution: Why I Stopped Euro Nymphing

Euro Nymphing is probably the most effective way to catch fish with a fly rod. I know this is fly fishing but for me its's just a little off and after euro nymphing for a few years I am here to talk about why I quit!

I'm overly dependent on euro nymphing. Yeah, I get you. We miss a lot of other good stuff while racking up the fish count. Like making a nice tight loop thru the air!

Same. I was physically removed from the river. I literally got stuck in a loop and couldn't leave - i was catch and releasing the same fish, on EVERY cast - I couldnt make myself leave the river cuz every cast was a hookup. Forgot to eat. Sleep. All I did was tight line nymphing.

Yeah I get it. I've tried every technique in this game - everything from traditional spey to big game bluewater with 16wt rods in the most remote places on this planet. And yes, you can slay fish on tactical nymphing but I switch it up all the time - always bringing my various rods with me and then choosing the one that I feel in the mood for.

Geat video. I learned Fly-Fishing in saltwater where it is all about getting the line out with a powerful cast. Fly-Fishing in my mind is about fishing a lure that is too light to cast with conventional or spinning gear. Instead of casting the weighted lure, we cast the weighted line. When I arrived out West, I was shocked to find guys fishing with bobbers, split shot, and nymphs. I expected dry-fly and streamers would be the thing, but instead they drift fish with bobbers ? No art or technique in casting. I love the feel of tension on the fly-line as it lifts from the water and loads the rod and shoots out through the guides. That is fly-fishing. Otherwise get a 15' bamboo pole with a fixed drop line and forget the reel, backing and all the other gear.

I am starting to go down the euro nymphing rabbit hole. I do catch a lot of fish doing it. However, I do also enjoy throwing a light line for dry flies. And I also enjoy tenkara fishing. I catch the most fish on tenkara, closely followed by euro nymphing. Smallmouth bass on a fly rod are a ton of fun too.

I love this video🤣 you MUST mix euro nymphing w/ drys and streamers. Also give those beaded flys some personality!

I'm kind of a dry fly snob. Sort of what you were but from the other side. Will nymph in the morning and throw wets until the sun is overhead but after that I'm on dries for the rest of the day no matter how terrible I do. Love the presentation and trying to put the fly exactly where I want it. Almost always have a good day but if I don't, no big deal, there's always tomorrow. Plus I'm by myself in the high country. 😊

I went through the same sort of thing with fly fishing - got turned on to euro nymphing by a guy I met at a river and got totally swallowed up by it. Within a few months, I had lost interest in fly fishing entirely. That was a couple of years ago. Now I'm getting back into it and realize that while euro nymphing has its place, it is just not as much fun for me. I'm going to keep exploring the sport now and try to sharpen my streamer skills and get back to dry flies. That being said, there are some streams where I'm from that are small with so much vegetation around, there is no way I would not reach for the euro setup.

Well, I know a guy in PA who is really into Euro Nymphing. He lives about 8 min from Penn's Creek, and he likes to catch fish. And he catches fish. A lot of fish. I live for dry fly fishing, but when I go to PA, I don't always hit the hatches- It's all good.

I can’t imagine walking an 11’ rod through the underbrush and creek side vegetation of small creeks in northern New Mexico or Southern CO.
My small creek rig is an 8’ #5 with a long leader. I may not catch as many as these euro dudes but I catch enough to make it fun and keep coming back.

I tried tenkara for a while but got annoyed by wind drag and trying to land fish with a long rod and overhead branches. Euronymphing eliminates those disadvantages but I don't enjoy casting it as much as casting a fly line... so I do it but only when I expect to see no rises all day. I think the point of all this is that we want to enjoy the process but also enjoy variety :)

Sometimes I do wonder if light spinning using a 3lb mono line and tiny mepps spinners is actually more subtle than casting a splashy number 6 line and pulling so called " fly" back through the water thats just heen disturbed by the fly line..

Exactly what Mr Kelly Gallup said a long time ago, no soul in euro nymphing. I like it but would much rather chase the trout with a dry.

I'm like, I can't tie a euro-nymph, as it is just a glorified jig - manufactured, not really tied.

In conventional angling, euro is basically their version of a 'pistol pete' a 'fly-lure.'

Innovative angling? Use a 40-ft .019-diameter, monofilament (25-lbs, manageable monofilament) in front of your 2wt or heavier fly line. I use it for dry fly fishing, with a 2-ft leader, and 2-ft tippet. The pcv-coated-braided fly line is too heavy in diameter. Like euro, less resistance with the water; like tenkara, it is all up close. I call it a 'Leadville Leader' because the stream is small, and the line is appropriate for a tight headwater creek, like in the headwaters of Colorado.

Good video but like everything nice in life, you need balance. Most people watching me fish think I’m euro nymphing but I’m just using a 3wt rod, tight lining, and on any given river, I use at least three different techniques by the end of the day by switching spools, leaders, flies etc. Recognizing your desire to do euro competition is the red line for me.

I don’t understand why people say dry fly fishing is artistic and euro nymphing is no soul and no art? Because of that famous movie? It’s just a matter of perspective, isn’t it? I can throw nymphs 40 feet and catch fish with euro nymphing. It’s super exciting and rewarding. Why isn’t it not an art?

Euro Nymphing is not Flyfishing. it is that simple.

This is a RIDICULOUS video All due respect to having an opinion but having done all kinds of fly fishing over the years including Euro if you allow yourself to get so engrossed in the "fishin/catching" aspect of this multifaceted sport REGARDLESS of which style you employ you are completely missing the point of being out in the wild on a gorgeous trout stream. Bottom line is that his argument could be used to denigrate ANY style of fly fishing if one is ignorant of the sheer joy of just being out there with a line in the water. Tight Lines and much Love to all my brother & sister fly fisherman out there :)
