Is Animal Crossing Dead?? How Nintendo killed New Horizons.

No one plays Animal Crossing anymore. It is so infuriating when a game with so much potential gets wasted, and even more infuriating when it's mobile counterpart (Pocket Camp) get's update after update.
We discuss whether it is and how it is (it is) entirely Nintendo's fault, now we have seen the final update for new horizons and you may still be wondering whether New Horizons is worth it in 2022, or whether you should just play Animal Crossing Pocket Camp.

From release I have loved not only the game, but the entire concept of Animal Crossing. Once I saw how much it meant to my girlfriend, I quickly fell in love with everything it had to offer. However, I am not sure the New Horizons hyped lived up to expectation, and I was disappointed. Animal Crossing is dying, but it doesn't have to be dead. Here are all the reasons I believe that Animal Crossing is dying in a quick video essay. I hope you enjoy.

When I was younger. I had animal Crossing wild world for the ds. It was a fun experience, running around, catching bugs and fish, digging fossils. But what I miss most is the personality in the villagers. If they had even a strand of life in new horizons maybe people wouldn't judge on their character design. I also miss celeste's observatory. Having my own constellation in the sky really meant a lot. Then I moved onto new leaf. Villagers still kept personality and it was fun. Having resetti brutally attack me if I didn't save my game 😂. I love acnh. I really do but it just feels unfinished. Like maybe shop upgrades, more museum upgrades, working in roosters cafe. Online updates maybe. Like cooking food for your friends inside the house. You know? They could do a lot but choose not to due to pocket camp :/

if i were to describe the game, i'd say wide as on ocean, but deep as a puddle.

Excellent video. I discovered animal crossing with wild word as a tween and I adored the game. Although I enjoyed everything, the thing that kept me coming back for more were the villagers. They were fleshed out and had a personality. With the grumpy ones in particular, you really felt like you had to earn their friendship. The other characters were also bursting with personality, for example, Resetti would shout at you if you didn’t save and Blathers shared his story and the origin of his insect phobia among some examples.

I noticed some loss of personality in NL but nothing awful. However, NH has become a primarily designing game with little personality. I played Wilde World for years bc the villagers kept me coming back but New Horizons had me bored in less than a year. It’s such a shame bc it had so much potential. Imo if the villagers and NPCs had retained their original personalities, this game would be the best yet but alas, they had to make it bland.

the only thing that brought new life into the game for me personally was finally getting a switch for my mom so she could play too, its been a joy to watch her experience acnh for the first time with all the content available for her at the start! we chat about whats new on our island and project fun personalities onto our villagers; if you really want to enjoy the game again to try to fill that ac-shaped void in your heart (if youre like me at least), i'd highly recommend sharing the game with a family member if you have the good fortune to be able to :) this video totally nailed it!

This is exactly why just after 2 years of playing I came back to new leaf, they traded the whole game soul for the sims.

I randomly found AC New Leaf at Gamestop back in 2012 (I was 8 then) and I absolutely loved the game. I loved it so much despite me never actually doing anything with my island. It wasn't until recently when I decided to replay the game that I even upgraded my house past the 2nd build upgrade lol. The reason I didn't do much decorating and building in New Leaf was because I had gotten AC Happy Home Designer and that's what I mainly spent my decorating time in (I actually fully finished the game and restarted lol) I just loved visiting New Leaf to talk to villagers, attend competitions, and play mini games with the villagers and on Tortimers island.

When AC New Horizons was announced, I was so excited and even went to Gamestop the day it launched to get the poster and physical copy (which I still have on my wall hehe) I spent hours playing the game, and the biggest flex for me is that I never once time travelled in any of the AC games 😏I put almost 400+ hours into ACNH and actually played it at the recommended pace and got to a 3 star island within around 2 but after I got to that point, I saw no need to continue playing on that island. I took a break, and decided to restart several times and got to 3 stars every single time without time travelling, but I still always got burnt out by the time I was able to unlock terraforming.

Eventually the 2.0 update came out, and I thought that would be perfect to try and get my current island to 5 stars and play the DLC. Since I absolutely loved Happy Home Designer, I figured I would love this one too, but after I got my island to 5 stars, I was just so burnt out on decorating that I didn't want to continue. In total, I completed like 2 of the vacation homes and then brought my island back down because I didn't like some of the stuff I added. Now it's just stuck in a state I don't really care to finish.

Although I did enjoy the game and have tons of hours spent in it, I was extremely dissapointed that they never bothered to add back the things I actually enjoyed about the game. I love decorating, and loved playing Happy Home Designer, but that was a seperate game MEANT for decorating and nothing else. I liked how New Leaf and HHD were seperate because it gave me a chance to be able to have fun with the villagers. However, in New Horizons, it advertised itself the same as New Leaf, but only really gave me the decorating aspect after the "tutorial" of the game. The only part of the game I actually had fun in was the beginning up till you get to 3 stars! The DLC was also still enjoyable for what I played, but I was just so overwhelmed with the decorating aspect of the main game that I didn't even want to play it.

I don't hate ACNH, and I know a lot of people really enjoy being able to make their own "dollhouse", but I just wish I was able to play the game like I used to 🥲

great video !! one thing I can't stand is how the player base is sooo divided between people who are disappointed with nintendo and people who get irrationally upset at the other players for being disappointed. its a good game for sure! I still would have bought it even if I knew all of this beforehand, I'm just upset that I can't be upset without upsetting other people (don't take a shot every time I say upset) about repetitive dialogue and dull villagers that make the game feel lifeless imo :( and the lack of updates lol. it just feels sucky that it could have been a lot better than it is. no one come 4 me its a silly game about talking animals <3 I just wish it felt less like an island decorator game and more like animal crossing!

Actually over thousands of people play new horizons. I still play new horizons and I think it’s the worst in the series. You should really say no one plays new horizons instead of animal crossing because there’s multiple animal crossing games. Pocket Camp gets updated because it’s a mobile spin off. New t is a mainline game so it’s not gonna get updated for years. Nintendo was too lazy to finish the game in the first place but everything added in updates should have just been in the game from the first place. It was in every other game from the start.

I obtained my copy of ACNH only a couple of months ago. At first I was thrilled with it, but once I'd expanded my house to its limit and paid for all the "shops" on Harv's island (about a month after starting the game), disillusionment set in, as I realized that there wasn't that much else to do. I've already caught all the bugs and fish that are currently available, Blathers keeps rejecting all my new fossils because the Museum has them already, and trying to complete the Art section is taking forever, thanks to Redd being so stingy with non-fake paintings and sculptures.

I like the natural beauty of my island, and have no desire to mess that up, so the terraforming feature is wasted on me. I have a 4-star island, and I don't really feel that motivated to achieve 5-star status, because really, what do you get for it? Lilies of the Valley? I can live without those. Golden Watering Can? Maybe -- if they made the darn thing unbreakable!

So yeah, I totally agree with this video. Shame on Nintendo for having such little regard for players of ACNH.

I agree. I really wanted to like New Horizons because of the graphics and the possibility to get so creative. But I, like many other players, have played since Wild World and the lack of personalities and dialog became apparent quickly to me. The villagers were always one reason why I love this franchise. This and the small village feeling. They took too much away from this in my opinion.
I haven't touched NH for a long time by now and rather go back to New Leaf or even Wild World, even though I love the new concepts NH introduced to the series. I find it sad. This along with the promise Nintendo didn't keep. And yeah, the music of the older games is fantastic and I still like to listen to it on its own. NH's music, not really.

Thing is I played New Leaf for years, never got bored, loved the music. I’d play for hours every day and I didn’t feel bored because there was so much to collect and explore. I could also play with my siblings. I honestly never got burned out, I would occasionally not play for a month or two but when I came back it didn’t feel like a chore.
New horizons is pretty, I do love the graphics but they’re isn’t much to do, items are more limited, the game is very repetitive. Villagers got more boring, like it doesn’t matter which villager you have so long as you got different personalities. And no COVID did not affect my game play cause I was an essential worker and was working 10-12 hour shifts. (I still get so mad that I even had to work so many hours cause I honestly didn’t care about all your packages getting there on time, I wasn’t getting paid extra to risk getting sick.) I will say they improved some stuff but clearly Pocket camp is more important, sad thing is I stopped playing pocket camp cause I’m honestly not spending that much money on a mobile game.

I feel like they focused way too much on the customization of the game. I love that we can customize a lot of stuff and make it how we want, but some players just aren't good at building and terraforming, myself included. I wish they would've thought about that player base as well because once I talk to my villagers and do my dailies, I just get bored. Like, I just recently completed my museum and now I feel like there isn't anything for me to do in the game besides try to get all the DIY recipes

I would disagree with the "we played too much at first and that's Nintendo's fault" because ngl I clocked in like 4+ hours a day CONSISTENTLY and now I haven't played it in two years 🙃
