It’s estimated that people in the UK sent £9bn overseas in 2020. Much of that will have been to family members.

Cedric pays for his mum’s rent. For him sending money every month is like paying his phone bill.

But, the expectation to send money back can be difficult to deal with. Some people have had to make the hard decision to cut back on the amount of money they send to family or to stop altogether.

I understand you have to support your family back home, but some families are too selfish, and they just assume money grows on trees in America/Europe. It's always something: somebody getting sick, somebody wanting the latest laptop, somebody getting married, etc... the excuses never end. Don't abandon your family, but you gotta somehow catch on to their bs.

Remitting money home started off as a benevolent gesture but it soon created an unhealthy culture of dependence and self-entitlement!
Relationships based on one-sided giving and giving is indulgent and unsustainable!

It really is an extra tax on those with family in poorer countries.Would be good to see those who send it admit to families back home that it effects the relationship when it becomes transactional especially when the recipient is a young person who can work.None the less support for family Is admirable despite what the demented bigots in the comments claim.

In many cases, sending money to an immediate family member like mom, dad… ppl may used them to get money from you. And many elderly ppl get pushed into it.
Mom would send good quality girdles and undergarments to my great aunt, she would give the away. 😒

how is this news? it seems like you want to actively work against the people that you personally have let business take advantage of. nobody wants to be whatever you label as "unpleasant" but you did nothing to protect the most vulnerable and now you don't even acknowledge their existence but you focus on people who take money out of the country and focus on people who aren't that vulnerable. you have this "helping people" idea backwards. you need to fix the problems that you have made in your country not just white wash it and replace who they are.
