Sailors Lay Down during E-2D Hawkeye Cat Shot

The Grumman E-2D Advanced Hawkeye Airborne Early Warning aircraft was refitted with an advanced design eight blade propeller. The prop’s arc is so large the catapult crew members must lay down in the catwalk during launch because standing up they could potentially get hit by a prop blade. #aviation #avgeek #pilot #pilotlife #aircrew #military #navy #aircraft #plane #fly #sky #ocean #flight #flying #photo #photography #videoviral #viralvideo #videos

The entire ship is a hazardous environment. Prop blades, jet intakes and exhausts, arresting cables, catapult bridles, arresting gear cables, the noise levels, chemicals, it goes up n and on. And the average age of the crew is about 19 years old. It carries and operates more aircraft on one ship than most entire air forces. And it all moves from place to place. Amazing

And no, the props are not turning slowly and backwards. The shutter speed of the video camera just makes them appear that way.

"Probably got hurt" is the understatement of the year. 😂

Back when the Kitty Hawk came back from a deployment without having lost a single crewman, it was big news through the fleet. When they did it TWICE, it was huge.

There is no job more dangerous than working the flight deck on launches and recoveries. I did it at night, during my 3 years in a attack squadron aboard a carrier. We had an E2 prop come apart and take out a bunch of guys with flying shrapnel from it’s blades due to the JBD ( jet blast deflector ). accidentally activated and coming up into the props as it was taxing up to the bow cats. It happened so fast, like a snap of your fingers. Just one mistake or misstep can affect everybody working that deck. There’s no do overs !

“Probably got hurt” is a really PG way of saying “minced beyond recognition.”

1: Camera effect. They see, hear and feel those props spinning
2: Catapult

My Dad was a crop duster and used to crank up his Pawnee Piper 225 by hand sometimes...very risky, one of his comrades Pilot got hit once in the head, hurt very bad but made it. God bless our armed forces.

I was almost blown over board in the cat walk by a E6 Prowder taking off at cat 1. That turbo jet was powerful

I remember that.
I've seen people walk into those.
The camera makes it look like they're moving slow, those props are moving as fast as they can go.

The drone of those props starting up still make my spine tense up.
I wasn’t afraid of anything on the flight deck. I respected the danger, but it didn’t scare me.
But “props on the move” over the speaker, followed by that drone sound… NOPE. Absolutely wasn’t doing my job any more until I knew exactly where that plane was.
