The Salt March, also known as the Dandi March, was a nonviolent protest led by Mahatma Gandhi against the British salt tax in colonial India. It began on March 12, 1930, and continued for 24 days, until April 6, 1930.

Gandhi and a group of his followers, known as Satyagrahis, walked 241 miles from Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad to the coastal town of Dandi in Gujarat. The purpose of the march was to peacefully protest against the British monopoly on salt, which was an essential commodity in India. The British had imposed a tax on salt, making it very expensive and difficult for poor people to purchase.

When Gandhi and his followers arrived in Dandi, he broke the British law by picking up a lump of salt from the beach, which was considered an illegal act under British rule. This act was followed by millions of Indians, who also began to make their own salt, which marked the beginning of the Civil Disobedience Movement.
