The buses should be free. In fact, the MTA needs to either be audited by the federal government for being “broke” 2 years after receiving a 3.9 BILLION dollar bailout! Or give the MTA over to the government to manage.

Let me put it basic for those who don’t understand why people are avoiding paying…
1- MTA constantly raises fairs but provide the worst service
2- homeless people/druggies will sleep/pass out in the trains
3- crime on the train is constant
4- MIGRANTS GET FREE METRO CARDS WHILE WORKING CITIZENS PAY FOR FARES
5- The trains are filthy as is

IF YOU CHOOSE TO DRIVE INSTEAD OF USING THE MTA, guess what? They’ve installed tolls in multiple parts of the city. So if hard working New Yorkers choose to not pay when it suits them. They supply soooo many resources to catch people who avoid paying, but meanwhile there’s constant shootings/murders/stabbing going on that doesn’t seem to be in control

As someone who rides public transportation everyday, I understand that paying the fare helps the system but for the quality of transportation $2.90 is absurd. Buses constantly getting delayed causing people to get to work late and Trains with crackheads, bums and stinky ass people who don’t care about the space of others. Ya want $2.90.. make it worth it.

Was on the bus today in queens…it was a regular route…..almost 15 ppl got kicked off. They didn’t bother taking the bus they walked. They are dead serious now

MTA cant deal with crazy pysho person at train but they are fare evader. They cant make subway safe from slash, crazy, stabbing but worried about fare evader

They cant audit each bus. They had about 12 plus more police officers at one stop. its impossible to audit each bus and create delays. Why they dont audit the $1.3 billion in overtime pay each year for the MTA. Im sure they can save $100s of millions per year at least.

The MTA is an inefficient and poorly run agency including all of its subsidary agencies, and I can tell you this because I worked for them. I left to go back into private sector work b/c I like my sanity. The transit system is unsafe, dirty, smelly and on top of this, they keep raising the fares. So it is not surprising that people are skipping out of paying the fare and feeling justified in doing so because of their perception the same broken system keeps charing them more. However, a staggering 48% of bus riders not paying puts even more stress on this service. It should never have gotten to the 48% which is another example of how this agency works that it took them years to either figure out the revenue loss or that they were going to do something about it. The PLAN they really need to get on is: 1. DRIVE efficiency, more employee productivity and get the Unions to accept common sense changes, 2. ELIMINATE all the bonus/fradulent overtime which pays employees are are less and less productive and hire more quality people, 3. REDUCE fares which would result in lower fare cheating and bring in more revenues.

Money is being taken and spent in ways that we don't approve of as a community/nation. Focus is on things that we feel are menial compared to others. This is the same thing we left England for. I believe someday it will come to a head in this country. America isn't immune to the chaos we see in other nations especially when your abusing people's money and ignoring their needs

The better solution is to lower the fares to $2 Full fare $1 for half fare, and raise fines to $250 for fare evasion, keeping the eagle teams in place.

But damn, all this work for making people pay bus fare. Just for there to still be traincarts/stations full of sleeping bums, 90% of train intercoms DON'T work, and the scheduling and "Train Traffic" is absurd. That's just the surface of issues. I guarantee if they fix actual problems, people would feel more inclined to pay. Cause the fare is constantly going up, but the quality of the MTA isn't. Shameful.
