Old Ben, one of my next door neighbors when I was growing up thought he had the right to defend his fruit trees. So he regularly shot buckshot at anything that moved and had two big traps right between his orchard and the Columbia River. All kinds of birds got caught in them, and die there, exhausted, and starving. It would have been a serious federal offense today, but back then it was different.

We never could even go to the river because of Ol' Ben. He wouldn't let us cross his orchard, though my brother would try with his buddies and get chased around as a pastime of his when he was bored or it was too hot. There was no trail back then or public land. I used to have to walk or bike across the river on the old pipeline bridge several miles when we finally moved into town to go to the only safe spot where me and some other preteens ruled the boat launch on hot days. Now that spot is taken over by druggies who come just over the fence from their campsites. They tried to break into my van there the other day. Spooky. In some ways it is better, but some ways much worse. No kids hang out there unattended today. Ever.

You can always take me but you can't take them. The more connections you show to the whole, that I know I am not alone, I will not leave them alone either. It grew like seeds out of dark places underneath earth, green.
