Kensington Philadelphia Drug & Crime Problems
Violent crime and drug abuse in Philadelphia as a whole is a major problem. The city’s violent crime rate is higher than the national average and other similarly sized metropolitan areas.1 Also alarming is Philadelphia’s drug overdose rate. The number of drug overdose deaths in the city increased by 50% from 2013 to 2015, with more than twice as many deaths from drug overdoses as deaths from homicides in 2015.2 A big part of Philadelphia’s problems stem from the crime rate and drug abuse in Kensington.

Because of the high number of drugs in Kensington, the neighborhood has a drug crime rate of 3.57, the third-highest rate by neighborhood in Philadelphia.3 Like a lot of the country, a big part of this issue is a result of the opioid epidemic. Opioid abuse has skyrocketed over the last two decades in the United States and Philadelphia is no exception. Along with having a high rate of drug overdose deaths, 80% percent of Philadelphia’s overdose deaths involved opioids2 and Kensington is a big contributor to this number. This Philly neighborhood is purportedly the largest open-air narcotics market for heroin on the East Coast with many neighboring residents flocking to the area for heroin and other opioids.4 With such a high number of drugs in Kensington, many state and local officials have zoned in on this area to try and tackle Philadelphia’s problem.

I watch this and my heart breaks. This is someone’s daughter, son, uncle, sister, mother, dad, cousin. This is awful.

Our western culture has showed us the “glory” of the gangster drugdealer life. This is the other side of the coin.

I‘m from Germany and was recently in San Francisco and saw such situations similar in Tenderloin. AbsoluteIy shocking! I wish the United States all the strength it has to overcome this epidemic. poor people. Young people. Sad.

They're sleeping in standing position and balance when they bend. They pause and the world stop. It's like watching a zombie movie in real life.

Every time I think I’ve had a bad day, I watch videos like this to remind myself that bad days for me shouldn’t exist. I have a family that loves me and a place to sleep at night. I clean shower and a fully stocked fridge. Never been abused or kicked out on my ass.

Seeing a child there and considering this will be its surroundings was more disturbing than anything else.

Welcome to the apocalypse - what a zombie town! How glad I am that I live in Germany in the countryside behind a dyke! The most horrible thing that can happen to me here is a visit from my mother-in-law.

We live In a throwaway society. A society where we give up on the elderly, our children, and people in poverty. But, no matter how many times I see shit like this, it still shocks and upsets me. Very tragic.

For me, a European, it is just a shock to watch! Dirt in the streets, people walking like zombies, poverty ... apocalyptic live images.
This is crazy, it's sad. Thank you for America like this! Unfortunately, this is not paradise, but hell. And if it is, it is only a margin, it is terrible.

I'm surprised you don't see busloads of Chinese tourists here in Philadelphia come to see how a first-world democracy really works.

Sad reality, it is depressing to see so many young people immersed in wrong decisions, but it is also good to raise awareness. Thanks for sharing.

This is shameful not only for the country, but also the people who abandoned their countrymen.

What a shame for so many talented people living in those poor conditions. And what a shame for our government not being able to cut the drug dealing
