Problems with Drugs and Crime in Kensington Ave, Philadelphia

In Philadelphia as a whole, violent crime and drug abuse are major issues. The city has a higher rate of violent crime than the national average and other similarly sized metropolitan areas. The drug overdose rate in Philadelphia is also concerning. Between 2013 and 2015, the number of drug overdose deaths in the city increased by 50%, with more than twice as many deaths from overdoses as homicides. 2 Kensington's high crime rate and drug abuse contribute significantly to Philadelphia's problems.

Because of the high number of drugs in the neighborhood, Kensington has the third-highest drug crime rate by neighborhood in Philadelphia, at 3.57. The opioid epidemic has played a significant role in this problem, as it has in much of the rest of the country. Opioid abuse has skyrocketed in the United States over the last two decades, and Philadelphia is no exception. In addition to having a high rate of drug overdose deaths, 80% of Philadelphia's overdose deaths involved opioids, and Kensington is a significant contributor to this figure. This Philadelphia neighborhood is said to have the largest open-air heroin market on the East Coast, with many neighbors migrating to the area for heroin and other opioids. With such a high concentration of drugs in Kensington, many state and local officials have focused on the neighborhood in an attempt to address Philadelphia's problem.

As an ex meth addict for 22 years this is so sad to watch. I was a 'functioning addict'' and always had a job. I had no one to finance my addiction but myself. After 22 years I had grown SICK OF IT and prayed for God to save me . Within 10 days my apartment was raided and I went to jail for 4 weeks. I lost my job and my home . After jail I was completely sober and had lost all desire for drugs. I paid my attorney, my court costs and my probation off the next 5 years. I've been sober for 7 years now and have never looked back. You have to be tired of the drugs and have a hatred for them along with faith in God to overcome addiction and STAY off them.

7 years clean from these streets. I still go down here frequently. I wish everyone had the opportunity to find freedom from addiction.

Thank you for making this video and raising awareness of the opioid crisis! I heard about it but I never knew there was such an epidemic in Philadelphia! There are a lot of homeless people there with serious drug addiction which makes their problems hundred times harder.

That this goes on is an indictment against the politicians of Philadelphis, who commit crimes against Humanity.

The thing that hits me is the diversity of clothes, ethnicity and age of the people out on the streets.
It tells me that it's not just one group that's been marginalised.
It looks more like the economy, the infrastructure and the government, just fucked off one day - leaving behind a city of people with nothing to do, nowhere to go, nothing to aspire to.

Greetings from Slovakia. This is the best channel to learn English. Many thanks to the author for the clear pronunciation. First I turn on the Slovak subtitles together with the English text, then without the Slovak subtitles. After each sentence, I stop and repeat at least 20 times simultaneously with the author.

Our society is slowly crumbling to pieces. We have this in our small town in North Carolina. I wish I could find a reason to feel optimistic but I can't. So heartbreaking, don't see any way we can recover, we have truly lost our way.

I once visited Philadelphia in the mid-1970's (after the movie 'Rocky'), and it was nothing like I'm seeing here. It's a tragedy to see all these major American cities falling like this. Yet the Federal government is too busy with doing things like helping the Ukraine and the middle east. If something is not done to address this major problem, it will escalate to a point where all of the US is threatened.

Kensington was a working class neighborhood. There were many factories. Those either closed or moved entirely. The latter started in late 70s/80s.

I can't imagine owning/working in a business in this area, you'd have to be insane to run this "gauntlet" on a daily basis 😱

This is so heartbreaking, it's probably a slippery slope all too easy to go down. The only thing that motivates these poor people is getting high.

I like that the narrator doesn't just take the 'drugs r bad - m'kaaay?' tack, but looks to address the underlying issues that make addiction more likely. Addiction is a disease of despair.

truly shocking, I am from Poland and I live in UK, never seen anything like it in Europe - there is seriously something wrong with Americans.
