The Board of Healthcare Funders (BHF), which represents 64 medical aid schemes across the continent, says that they are concerned about the sustainability of the industry, as it grapples with the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic during this period.
BHF compiled research on a range of issues pertinent to medical aid schemes. Financial sustainability is at the centre of the difficulties, based on the projections of an upsurge in coronavirus infections.
Questions of sustainability in respect of healthcare expenditure; retention of membership; matters related to fraud, and waste, are some of the challenges highlighted.
Further, there is a decline of over 50% in the utilisation of health services due to a decline in hospital admissions.
Charlton Murove, who is the Head of Research at the Board of Healthcare Funders, joins us now via Zoom.

I do not understand why this guy is complaining about medical aids not having enough money. 1) they have been deducting their full amount every month even though most of our people's salaries have been cut by +- 25%. 2) I have been with my medical aid for almost 7 years and the most I have used it is 3 - 4 times a year to see the general practitioner. 3) I am unsure, but I think they do not cover covid19 testing you still have to pay out of pocket for that. 4) he himself said most of South Africa is not using their medical aid like previous years so what are they doing with that money they are collecting every month?
