How To Repair Computer Keyboard With Some Keys Not Working

It's pretty easy to fix a computer keyboard most of the time. Usually is just needs to be taken apart and cleaned. Several keys on my desktop computer keyboard weren't working very well. They wouldn't work unless I hit them harder. So I took the keyboard apart and cleaned it and got it working again. This keyboard is from my Compaq PC.

YOU HAVE TO LET IT DRY COMPLETELY BEFORE YOU REASSEMBLE!!! IF THE KEYBOARD DOESN'T WORK AFTER DOING THIS, TRY IT AGAIN! AND LET IT DRY COMPLETELY!!!!!!!!!!!!!

👍 And please give my video a thumbs up 👍

for those who are still having trouble

your key may not actually be broken or have dust in it, try using a cotton swab to realign the rubber silicon underneath the key. my r key was misaligned and when i put it back in place it fixed the issue.

Early in my IT career, I shared an office with a hardware tech who was responsible for maintaining and repairing many hundreds of terminals. When a keyboard failed, he would swap in a working one. When he had saved up a load of nonfunctional keyboards, he would take them home and wash them in his dishwasher. After letting them dry for several days, he would bring them back and put them into the spares store as working replacements.

for anyone that tried to follow this video and ended up with a broken keyboard instead of fixing it, try and put the membrane contacts properly like on the top right of the keyboard on 2:58 (pause it) also don't forget to put the metal bit that keeps the contacts in place because that's the important part to making it work again

Worked for the ctrl key of my Logitech MK700/710, and keyboard just works 10 times better all around. Thanks for the encouragement. Dang, that keyboard has a lot of screws.

Clean the electronic leads on the little circuit board which has the three led lights sitting on the top right hand corner. If the leads have darkened due to dust, it will have a hard time picking up electronic signals from the circuit membrane. A pencil eraser is a nice thing to use and it worked like a charm for me.

It worked perfectly, if you are doing this make sure you are very careful and working in a clean environment, you don't want your keyboard getting dirtier than it already is

noticed the major problem is likely moisture between the plastic sheets [3 on my machine],    used barely  moist alcohol cloth,   no paper,   let sit for couple of hours or use hair dryer with coolest setting at least 15" from sheets,     if contact still doesn't work use a vinyl pencil eraser to lightly scrub the contact points {wipe with alcohol cloth again},   DO NOT TOUCH CONTACT POINTS WITH YOUR FINGERS.   The rubber plastic sheet is to provide the return or push back up of the keys.    It will provide some protection from liquids (don't count on it) and slightly more protection from dust particles.   Routine vacuum cleaning from the top of keys will lengthen the frequency between internal contamination.

Anyone that reads this comment, its not to hard, all you need to do is clean the laptop, maybe vacum over it, then reset ur pc, after that put something on top of the broken key, not to heavy, just to hold it down, and another thing on the opposite side when its turned off, this should fix if the button is jammed, and or reset the keys, leav the pc off for a day with the stuff on it, take it off then turn on ur pc it should fix it, if this helped like it

Excellent video & advice. Spilled pure water on my Dell L100. 3 keys did not recover after 5 days. Disassembled & found no remaining water. Removed stubborn Mylar circuit deposits. 3 keys still do not work. Conclusion: I should have disassembled & aired it out immediately after the spill.
