I am shocked. The ultra cheap douk dac sounds much More open and more clarity. Better stereo image too. Unfortunately it doesn't have coaxial so i can't use

Might it be an ESS versus an AKM sound preference ?
I would say as a general matter, that $100 DACs sound pretty similar based on my experience and I personally, and generally prefer AKM but not always

B has more high, a little sharp. A sounds better. You are right about the lacking of head phone in, on modern tv's...

For me personally, and I definitely don’t have “Golden Ears” the B in the music sample sounded a little harsh over the A.

It's totally subjective, but I found the Douk to at first seem a little more open, but the more i listen, the more it seems like slightly colouration with a little emphasis on the lows and mids which does give it more "oomph". I definitely found the SMSL to have better overall accuracy.

However, it's not always about the pursuit of accuracy, and the Douk really provided an enjoyable listening experience.

It gets a thumbs up from me 👍

B for me was better, had more air, a bit less bass, but deffo B sounded better for my old lug holes.

Through my tablet, B comes through a lot clearer, especially with strings. Sounded very nice.
