Windows 7 Users Migrate To Windows 10 Rather Than Linux

Windows 7 will reach end of life in just two months. Many Windows 7 users are already ditching Windows 7 and moving to another operating system. The problem is: that operating system that those users are moving to is NOT LINUX.

I don't entirely agree. The main reason people don't switch is because:
- "I'll have to upgrade my windows 7 machine."
- "You should try Linux"
- "What's that?"
- "It's an OS"
- "What is an OS?"

I'm on Linux Mint from Windows 10 for 2 weeks now and couldn't be happier.

To be honest though, I'd rather see people adopt Linux as their primary OS because they want to, and it was their choice. Not because of Microsoft dropping support for Windows 7. We are all about choice in the Linux community, so getting all disappointed over what someone else chooses to use as their OS kinda goes against the whole "freedom" philosophy doesn't it?

Also, think about this in a positive light. If you are a Linux user in the 1%. That means you have a skill set that not a lot of other people have nor have even bothered to learn. That knowledge can go a long way to benefit you if you apply it.

The switch to Linux was never going to be a waterfall type event but rather a slow progression.
Windows 10 and its poor privacy and functionality will continue to be the best marketing for switching to linux alternatives.

In the last year I replaced Windows 7 with Linux Mint for several people and they have found it useful because it fitted their requirements. They weren't IT types but they were educated with active brains and had little trouble with the transition. But before I came along, none of them had heard of Linux. There is a big part of the problem. Most people just want to use the machine -- not tinker with it. And using one of the easier distros is a lot less aggravating than using Windows.

I completely disagree with the sentiment that Linux users are born not made. Anyone can use Linux, because there's a Linux distro targeting every user type. There is real unease about the data collection present in Windows 10 with non-technical people, and I think that will drive adoption. I'm not saying this is the year of the Linux desktop, but over time that unease will move the needle.

What quite helped me adopt linux is when you realise when windows breaks you're on your own same as with linux but on linux people actually fix the issues (and have the ability to do so) instead of reinstalling every damn time

“Switching to Linux” is an academic point, until you can walk into a Best Buy and see a computer that’s running Ubuntu or some other stock distribution. People don’t acquire operating systems, they acquire computers.

At the start of the year I was running windows 7 and windows 10 on my computers. Not only did I switch but arch was the Linux that helped me to finally get Linux.

For what it's worth, myself, my mother, and my father are moving to Linux. I'm trying to do my part. Will not voluntarily move to Win10 if I can avoid it. It is a plague to the desktop.

You should rather encourage ppl how easy it is to use linux rather than to explain that "the idiots will not switch anyway".

I think Linux distros are invisible to market share websites because unlike Windows, most Linux distros don't include trackers and telemetry for security and privacy reasons so even if half the world switched to Linux, market share websites will still say Linux only has 2% market share on desktop.

I moved to Linux Mint. I started with a VM and my laptop. Now it's on my desktop.
The only thing I miss is Lightroom.

Mass Adoption will happen when Google or Valve creates Linux Operating Systems that are pre-packaged. Without Valve and Proton, I would have never tried Linux as a Desktop OS. Chew on that for a minute... Linux adoption is happening but it's as Linux is made more user-friendly... Has nothing to do with anything else.

I went through the same process, but it was Windows XP being EoL'ed. I ended up with Linux!

I was never going to get my girlfriend to go to Linux, but I did get her on ChromeOS. It did everything she wanted and even ran Android apps she was used to. I considered it a win.

Not me. Once Windows 7 loses support, I'm going 100% Linux.

The reason is because linux get people frustrated, although there is help you need to understand what is happening under the hood to implement also the man pages in linux doesn't make sense to even the most (Computer technical) technical of people that's why the Arch wiki needs to replace the man pages at this point (The arch wiki also better troubleshooting steps while the man pages has none). Linux needs to be like most people who drives a car, they just drive they never have to worry about the engine, wheels, oil pressure, it needs to just take you 'there' not you solving the reason why the piston in the engine is not turning the crankshaft. Also too many installation videos and too many linux distro, just need to make one good one. Linus Torvalds needs to start scrutinise the rest of the OS not just the kernel (engine) because if connect a harddrive after you cannot copy a file due to permission issues, there should be a pop-up that request for the root/sudo password instead of having the options greyed out, or if you need format the drive (It's the little things that will take you a far way which is constantly being overlooked).

I tried win10 back when they snuck it in through a win7 update. I hated it. I did a system restore to take me back to win7. The prospect of being forced permanently into using win10 at the start of next year had me searching for an alternative OS several months ago. I have settled on Pop OS with the Cinnamon DE for my daily driver although I like to peruse other distros.

The fact that people would rather pay money to buy a copy of Win10 to run and which will not run well on their older hardware just goes to show what brain dead zombies most computer users are. I've always been a "Do it yourself " kind of guy, probably why I love Linux.
