The Failure of Expert Predictions and Models | The Coronavirus and Public Policy

Hillsdale College is an independent institution of higher learning founded in 1844 by men and women “grateful to God for the inestimable blessings” resulting from civil and religious liberty and “believing that the diffusion of learning is essential to the perpetuity of these blessings.” It pursues the stated object of the founders: “to furnish all persons who wish, irrespective of nation, color, or sex, a literary, scientific, [and] theological education” outstanding among American colleges “and to combine with this such moral and social instruction as will best develop the minds and improve the hearts of its pupils.” As a nonsectarian Christian institution, Hillsdale College maintains “by precept and example” the immemorial teachings and practices of the Christian faith.

The College also considers itself a trustee of our Western philosophical and theological inheritance tracing to Athens and Jerusalem, a heritage finding its clearest expression in the American experiment of self-government under law.

By training the young in the liberal arts, Hillsdale College prepares students to become leaders worthy of that legacy. By encouraging the scholarship of its faculty, it contributes to the preservation of that legacy for future generations. By publicly defending that legacy, it enlists the aid of other friends of free civilization and thus secures the conditions of its own survival and independence.

How impressed I was by this presentation—intelligent, respectful, non-political. Yours is a voice that deserves a much larger audience. No fear-mongering here—just everything in perspective. I am a school teacher and the question period brought me to tears. These little people need to be back in school for all the reasons you cited. Where have all the thinking people gone?

In religion, there is a term for those kind of people, “false prophets.” To bad “experts” in the science community aren’t held to any sort of standard when it comes to their false predictions.

I believe that the entire point is lost here. We are a free nation and that fact has not only been ignored but essentially spit upon by people who are not supposed to have such power but using fear are handed it by the courts and police power structures. It was the responsibility of the government to warn people and to supply structural support but not to take away Constitutional rights as if they are so unimportant that they don't matter. That state governments responded in such a manner should have every governor literally in chains and a cage awaiting extremely serious trials for abuse of power. In the cage next to them judges and police chiefs who were sworn to protect the law and chose rather to protect a power structure. The government had the responsibility of warning people and SUGGESTING actions to a free people but never to force their will upon them.

The problem with experts is they are never fired, demoted, or held accountable. This Ferguson guy has made massive blunder after massive blunder and yet this presenter still refers to him as a highly respected expert. It’s just a façade to protect them from criticism. What this guy obviously is, is a publicity hound who makes outrageous predictions which get his name in the media and get everyone talking about him. He has abused his position of influence and because we listened to him our society has been irreparably damaged. He should not be referred to as highly respected but highly discredited instead. There is something wrong with our society where this accountability does not seem to happen.
