The Bible doesn’t say people have the right to other people’s “Food, ” or any other personal property, it says the well off have a moral duty to assist the needy.

If Christianity is the source of the French revolution as Holland suggests, then why did the revolutionaries in France persecute the Church in the reign of terror?

You can't rightly maintain history's greatest standards of compassion without also genuinely recognizing and constraining inate human evil at the same time.

In other words, Christianity provides a complete anthropology that no other way of thinking does.

The Nazis essentially espoused a crude version of Nietzsche’s critique of Christianity.

Jesus didn't say people had rights. He said people had responsibilties

I wouldn't say people have a right to food, but people do have an obligation to feed the hungry. It's a subtle, but very important distinction. Especially, when you look at history and realize that whenever the "right" to food is declared by government, mass starvation quickly follows.

It kind of is true that Christianity's compassion is destroying the societies that Christianity built, by people who now reject Christianity, and those who embrace it. How's that for a paradox?

Amen. David Satter makes this same point about communism in his book "Never Speak to Strangers". Human rights are based in the transcendent, not the immanent.

Interesting that the person speaking on behalf of Christianity doesn’t know what is recorded in the Bible. Jesus never said the rich have an “obligation” to feed the poor. He told one particular man to give his wealth to the poor if he wanted to be a disciple. He did so because wealth and power were more important to that young man than following Jesus. Jesus was instructing him to give up that which came between him and doing God’s will. (We don’t know what choice that man made for sure because the scripture only tells us that he was sad because his wealth was very important to him).

Jesus friend Lazarus was wealthy. We know that because his sister used very expensive perfume on Jesus to honor him yet we see no indication Jesus condemned Lazarus for his wealth and clearly did not tell him to give it up.

The Apostle Paul in 2 Thessalonians 3:10 made it clear that one is responsible for working to earn the ability to eat: “”if any would not work, neither should he eat.” So much for your “right to food.” The right to food, housing, etc… are communist precepts, not Christian.

Also, Paul did not preach a dead man on a cross. He preached the living, resurrected Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. If you leave Jesus on the cross you are not preaching the Gospel.

National socialism is still socialism, and literally all socialism back to Marx has hated Christianity.

Tom Holland is so articulate and can make complex issues understandable. He is more than an historian, he is a modern philosopher and teacher.

That's how it seems to me, as a non-Christian, for to a Christian I still have some worth because I have a Human soul and therefore have moral value, whereas to secular people, it seems, if I'm not supporting their systems and outlooks, then I am an enemy to them with no moral value, whatsoever, which kind of makes sense, since shared agreement is all that's keeping their value system together.

The short answer is the Bible says all evil people will hate Christians.

“And everyone will hate you because you are my followers. But the one who endures to the end will be saved.”
‭‭Mark‬ ‭13‬:‭13‬ ‭NLT‬‬

“So don’t be surprised, dear brothers and sisters, if the world hates you.”
‭‭1 John‬ ‭3‬:‭13‬ ‭NLT‬‬

Interesting that the Nazis still utilised christian heritage and clergy for their own purposes because the German army had thousands of military chaplains also marching east, west, north & south.
That said, other clergy refused to accept nazi ideology and support the war, with many dying for their faith and stance.

at 1:19 Tom says "if follows that those who don't have food have a right to food"
but Paul said in 2Th 3.10

"If anyone is not willing to work, let him not eat."
So you don't have an inherent right to food if you won't work...that's a humanist or marxist idea, not a Christian ethic
You are commanded to help the unfortunate, not the lazy or slothful

Interesting. I just figured the Left can't have any large group of people acting cohesively and happily against their ridiculous notions.
