This is the most beautiful song I know of. Thank you Martin and Martin for sharing. That is a gift.

This is a beautiful song and one of the saddest I've ever heard. It was originally written by Martin Taylor. On his Facebook page, he wrote regarding Martin Simpson's version of his song:

"I played one of my songs tonight in Minneapolis called "One Day" I played the instrumental version, but I'd like you to see Martin Simpson's wonderful version with the lyrics that tell the complete story.

It's about my son Stewart who was a jockey and took his own life in 2005 age 21. Some of it is is the English Romany Gypsy language. "Chavo" is a boy, and "Kushti grai" means a nice horse. It's a message from me to him. Here's the lyrics in full...

For my heart it is broken, for I love you so dearly
My Romany chavo, my dear Gypsy boy
But the life we shared, it was gone in a moment
And with it all pleasure, and with it all joy

You rode a horse like a king, and you sang like an angel
But it brought you no peace by night and by day
For when sunlight burns cruel, and moonlight shines bailful
There's no reason to go, and no reason to stay

You rode a horse like a king, and I watched you so proudly
With my heart in my mouth, afraid you might fall
And when the fall came, there was no one to catch you
There was no one to help you, no one at all

The twin oaks in the hedgerow, it grows from such sadness
Grows strong from the grave of a lost Gypsy child
And the leaves and the long grass, they whisper your name
My Romany chavo, so dear and so wild

One day I'll hear hoof beats, and not grieve the rider
And the song you once sang, will bring peace and not pain
And the fields where you rode on your own kushti grai
Will bloom with the promise of laughter again

One day I'll hear hoof beats and not grieve the rider
And the song you once sang will bring peace and not pain
And the fields where you rode on your own kushti grai
Will bloom with the promise of laughter again."
