Anatomy studies are art! When we're drawing to practice muscle groups, we should still be looking for the flow of the gesture, even within the individual muscle groups.

“We study anatomy so that we can use it to tell a better story, not just to know a bunch of muscle shapes” is such an important reminder, thank you!

Ahhh I really need to keep this in mind, I can get so hyperfocused on the small muscle groups and I forget to see the entire flow of everything

And when drawing from memory and imagination one has to remember that muscles stretch and flex. What annoys me in many fantasy illustrations, for instance, is how the characters are always impossibly flexing every single muscle in their body, no matter the pose or implied movement, which often affects how dynamic and tangible the scene feels.

Did I just find my favourite YouTube channel? I have an undergraduate in Fine Arts and became a chiropractor. This is bliss. I love this stuff!

The football part cracked me up, but this is very informative. I've always been too caught up in drawing every muscle, especially since I learned how to draw via comic books. Some of the 90s comics emphasized EVERY MUSCLE. Lol!!

The part about the shadows is so important, especially once you're more comfortable and confident with the flat drawing/sketch aspect. I made this gorgeous nude sketch of a gentleman sitting, the musculature looked beautiful, alive and fluid and then I panicked and botched the shapes of the shadows while laying down the colours and it just looks like trash now😂 some of the brush strokes even work against the flow even though the colour palette was pretty solid.

One tip I really really liked that I got when I was just a year into art (9+ now) is "humans don't have straight lines, we are wavey" and I have followed that even now i do

Your channel has helped me so much when I started getting serious about drawing. I still from time to time need a refresher. You probably know this already but your channel is really important to the community and I thank you for it.

It's probably less than 1% of the population that has well-delineated muscles that show over skin. Where the muscle disappears into the skin and fat is as important as the underlying muscle, bone and tendon structures. Fat is a part of your subject and your character, too, but we spend so much more time studying muscles than we study the behavior of anatomical fat.

Im often drawing a line in middle of arm/leg/posture/head to make it easier to draw realistic proportions

im a bodybuilder. i spend a lot of time staring at my and other peoples muscles so, drawing it is so easy for me
however, i need work with posing, so learning the artistic aspect of anatomy would definitely benefit me when drawing
