We just started spending our retirement winters in Thailand where we own two condos in the North part of Pattaya (more quiet while offering the cleanest beaches in the area). My wife is Thai and we both really enjoy the country, it's people and it’s very high quality of health care, both public and private (get proper travel insurance through reliable companies such as Blue Cross and Allianz) Of course there are 5 stars everything just as there is many 3 stars accomodations that are reasonably priced for those renting seasonally. If you are a Westener or European and are willing to ''reset'' your brain and enjoy it for what it offers, instead of comparing it to what you are ''used to'', then you'll be more than happy to settle in for many great years to follow.

I have long since crossed off Spain and Portugal as winter destinations, For 30 years I have stayed there until November when it becomes too wet and windy. (Not cold but you will spend as much on heating as you would in, say, South Carolina). After November I crossed into Morocco, The Autoroute goes straight from the docks to Agadir where it is summer year round. Everything you might want and cheap and much safer than Europe.
