Jennifer Lawrence's Hidden Economics Lesson

In "No Hard Feelings," Maddie Barker is just trying to make ends meet -- yet the government, and specifically the IRS, seem to make that as hard as possible. The Jennifer Lawrence rom-com certainly isn't a treatise on public policy, but her character's experience is more realistic than it seems.

The responsible citizens who pay more into the system than they take out in the form of government spending per capita (along with grants, transfers, and subsidies) should be the ones that vote for congressional representatives. It would honestly encourage legislators to draft more ballanced budgets in the long run.

Is there a full video which dives into this deeper? We know that the top 1% pays around 40% of all federal income taxes as per IRS data, but is that all that's referenced here?

Last I checked, the IRS doesn't do property taxes. This would have been the county.

Taxation, being the enemy in a romantic comedy, is honestly a very "Millenial" problem to have

Agree on the IRS, disagree on the “xenophobia” diagnosis.

Taking anything at all, under threats of force, is still stealing. Whether it's small, manageable amounts that seem almost justified; or large amounts that can't be paid at all. It's a violation of principle to begin with. All taxes are collected by coercion under threat, and are all therefore immoral.

People who hate taxes are also some of the people who say spend more on the Military and no cuts to the military budget lol.

No, that's not the villain. The villains are the people that jacked up the prices. It's that simple.

I gotta say gaslighting the viewers into believing a government organization doing its job is a bad thing is a new low, its like blaming the cops for catching a thief and for those who disagree the irs recieves mustard-coated checks imagine the frustration of trying to remove it.
