Where I study, we use an empty or filled circles instead of ( ) or [ ].

This seems exactly like interval notation, except with an unnecessary "x" and some fancy bracketing. i.e. "{ }"

The "half circles" are better known as parentheses. They are used in interval notation, not on the number line. Filled or hollow rings serve the same purpose on the number line, and these are the ones you should be using for the number line.
