Anyone know the reasoning behind not showing them?

Note: I want to add that I was corrected that these were “Deaf Performers, ” not “ASL interpreters” like they were introduced as at the game.

Last year when Rihanna was the half time show, one of the interpreters hired became sort of famous for how her movements embodied the language of the song. It was so great. So for them to not do it again this year… it’s a shame.

What was the point of an ASL interpreter if you don't get to see the interpreter?
Being able to see the ASL interpreter is the entire point of having an ASL interpreter!

Exactly! Also, last year's Superbowl interpreter was absolutely brilliant. The way she danced and had so much energy with each of her signs was spectacular!

The Deaf community has been talking about this issue for years. None of the broadcast companies show the Deaf performers the whole time. You have to go to a special stream link online for that.

One CODA I saw was super hopeful and then nope.

My boyfriend and I watched a good portion of the Nickelodeon live stream and they had a box in the corner showing SpongeBob and Patrick sitting next to the announcers. If they can do it for SpongeBob they could have done it for the interpreters too 😂

The Deaf community has been complaining about this, too. They had to go to a special URL to be able to watch the interpreters

THANK YOU. As someone who was raised in a deaf family, I'm so glad to finally see someone speak up about it. Thank you!!!! ❤🤟🏼

I have seen some spectacular SL performances from many countries. Poetry in motion defined.

Saw some ASL interpreters interpreting stand-up the other day and it really enhanced the performance, especially when the comedian learned that some signs are REALLY on the nose.

Amen! And I'm not a football fan. But my aunt was deaf, and her daughter, my cousin, is hard of hearing. And yes, a skilled, passionate interpreter is an amazing performer on their own. Gonna need more than a tiny box in the corner to capture the dramatic arm movements.

And the exaggerated arm & hand movements and facial expressions are necessary to make sure the meaning can be seen clearly in a large room.

I was. Confused and disappointed. I mean, what was the point if the audience ( which included those watching via tv) if we couldn't watch the interpretation as well? I have seen an asl poetry interpretation, and I was mesmerized! I swear at some point, I completely tuned the poet out, and focused entirely on the interpreter. 😅

And this is truly wild because if you've seen deaf interpreters perform it's like a whole nother dancer on stage! And then when you add that they are literally speaking a whole nother language🤯

It's the kind of form and function that so gratifying!

I love ASL Deaf Performers. Even though I hear well, my ADHD can get in the way of understanding some speech. Having an interpreter/performer makes the performance, lecture, presentation so much more accessible. And I definitely classify some of the interpretations as poetry.

I've heard it said that the more we listen to disabled folks and accommodate them the nicer things able folks have too.

Like ramps? Fuckin HANDY.
My friend is an ASL interpreter and the go SO HARD they're so fun to watch everyone would love to see them.

More accommodations and listening to disabled people. Let's go.

Yesss! We had sign language dancers visible for all during Eurovision and it made the whole event SO much more enjoyable.

The 2 drag shows Ive been to had interpreters. I ended up watching them 90% of the time instead of the queens. Im always surprised we dont have ASL musical performances in WAY more places. The whole language is so expressive and captivating, its perfect for performance! (Also Deaf ppl do still listen to music, most Deaf ppl dont have 100% hearing loss)

I couldn’t agree more! Skilled deaf performers are beautiful to watch.
