I grew up in a household with a stereo realist and viewed all my family photos through a weird light up binocular viewer. A stereo lens is a great idea to translate to VR. There are other options, and this one might not be perfect, but it’s worth trying!

Stereoscopic images like these can be used in 3D reconstruction, the slight differences are enough to create a relative depth map, and if you know the distance between the 2 lens and the camera focal length, it's possible to create an absolute depth map!

I suppose for 20 bucks you could use it as a glorified cap; but there might still be other cheap pancake lenses which are more useful

I’d honestly use this. I’d love to take 3D photos with my good camera and view it with either 3D glasses or on a Nintendo 3ds. I wouldn’t even have to worry about the quality on that system’s display.

I imagine you could use this to create old school stereoscopes which I feel like emphasize the 3d effect quite well

Honestly it just cost slightly more than a lens cap. Can get it as a fun lens cap.

if the lens was better quality it could make some sweet cross-view 3d images you can see just by focusing your eyes correctly

Its a really good fun 3D lens. You can view these on a VR headset.

The stereo stuff seems useless but I somewhat like the image it produces so if it were just a regular pancake I'd be more interested.

There are other stereoscopic lenses that are actually good. For example Canon has the 5.2mm dual fisheye lens.
