Congrats on your first marathon! I aspire to achieve that within the next few years.

I saw from somewhere that our glycogen storage only lasts around 2 hours. Oxidizing fat for energy is great and that’s something to improve, but typically it is very low output compared to carbs. So once you run out of glycogen you crash. Replenishing carbs and electrolytes with gels sounds like just the right boost you needed to push through!

Not a good test. If you do better the 2nd time you wont know if its because you're more fit, more experienced, or because of the running gels

Incorporating gels 1 time will likely not produce reliable results
You will need a significantly larger sample size to determine what is better
