Button Battery Ingestion Emergencies

preview_player
Показать описание
This video was created specifically for parents who are worried their child may have ingested a button battery. If the battery gets past the esophagus and to the small and large intestines, it will usually pass without difficulty. However, if the button battery is stuck in the esophagus, the clock is ticking, and you have an emergency that must be addressed quickly.

In this video we demonstrate using a hotdog model of the esophagus the damage that button batteries can cause in just a short period of time.

Doc I love your videos. I will be starting at the EM as a physician myself. You inspire me.

Thank you for this fascinating demonstration Dr. Mellick. It serves as a reminder to always dispose of used “button batteries” correctly and keep the supply of new ones inaccessible to all littles who come visit.

So ideally, this gets removed as quickly as possible... Wouldn't be wise to wait for a specialty consultation?

Side note, button battery numbers are in reference to their size. For example the CR2032 is 20mm wide and 3.2 mm think.

Scary to see the damage they cause! That's why it's important for parents and caregivers to keep small objects especially button batteries out of the reach of children. And if they suspect an injestion, get them to the ED ASAP

Very interesting video! Suggestion - I'd rather hear your voice than the text to speech voice used in most of the video. The TTS voice makes the video sound like an advertisement.

I had this case during paramedic clinicals. 2 year old with copious oral secretions. Mom couldn’t tell us much on scene, but it was deduced that the patient swallowed “something”. We made rapid transport and later found out that it was a button battery.

I believe that there should be less damage if the battery is discharged.

Does the epithelial protection quality of the honey outweigh the risks to young children of botulinum toxin which may be found in medically-relevant levels in many batches of honey?
