The imaginary numbers add like normal but when multiplied, they scale and rotate. z^2 + c is a point rotating and scaling around itself then translating by c. The Mandelbrot set is a vortex.

I always imagined atoms and matter behaving like this. Like, you get down to the size of an atom and let's say you could land a bulldozer on top of an electron. You take a scoop out of that electron and then zoom into it until you see the atoms that make up that electron.

Then, land your bulldozer on an electron from that Atom and take a scoop out and zoom in until you see the atoms of that electron and then land on an electron from that Atom and take a scoop and zoom in till you see the atoms that make up that electron and land on it and take a scoop and zoom in until you see the atoms that make up that electron and so on and so on and so on into infinity. Just like how you look out into space and travel to the furthest reach of the universe and then step on the other side and move out to the edge of that universe and then step over into the next. So, infinity means we can travel inwards for eternity just like we can zoom outward for eternity.
