How to Get a Dent Out of a Bumper

They sure don’t make ‘em like they used to. And fortunately for you, dealing with a dented car bumper these days is a lot easier than it used to be. In this installment of our Fix It in 15:00 video series, we’ll show you how to fix this problem yourself with some simple tools.

A word on car bumpers. Back in the day, metal bumpers were the standard on vehicles all over the world. Originally inspired by similar bumpers used on train cars, the ultimate goal of a bumper is to absorb energy in primarily low-speed collisions and while it may be a bummer to have one get damaged, it does protect the front and rear end of your vehicle from damage that could be much more costly.

In the late 1960’s the plastic bumper was introduced and remains to this day. Not only is it a more cost-effective material, but it’s more flexible than metal bumpers which is the main reason it can be fixed much easier.

Here’s how to get a dent out of a bumper:

● Take a hairdryer and run it on high heat, in close proximity to the dented plastic bumper for ten minutes (you can place it on a chair so you don’t have to hold it)
● Once it’s nice and hot, the plastic will be highly flexible
● Using the handle end of a hammer, with some level of force you’ll want to roll it against the dent from the underside of the bumper

NOTE: BE SURE TO PUT THE EMERGENCY BRAKE ON BEFORE YOU GET UNDER THE CAR.
● It may take some time, but after working the dent for a few minutes, eventually, it will start to pop out

You can always opt to take it to a body shop to have it painted, but if not, you just saved yourself a few hundred dollars (or more) of expense!

A cool, rainy day here in FL, so I was a bit bored and adventurous----followed this video and all suggestions. Success! Thank you for posting.

Lol! You rock.
I like that added “try to be careful next time” 🤣comment! I didn’t look back carefully like I normally do. Thank you!

Thank you. When boiling water didn't work, I found your video. It worked 😃. My 2006 Toyota Corolla is dent free.

Thanks. I was able to use this to "mostly" get the dent out of our Town & Country bumper. It's not pretty, but way better than it was and the car's 18 years old, so I'm not paying to make it pretty.

Had the same type of dent, same location on the back of my Nissan...noticed it this morning. (Someone hit me yesterday in a parking lot...smh!) This worked like a charm, thanks so much!!

First of all, thank you. I followed your directions and it worked. The only issue I had was with getting the bumper warm enough. The first time it didn’t work so I adjusted the location of the hairdryer and did it again and I got most of the dent out. I warmed a little more and finished it. Thanks for the video.

Thanks, bro! Relatively simple. I needed a longer handle since my dent was higher up, but same idea. I have that folding chair too.

Thanks for the video. I'm wondering which is easier/faster/better results? Doing it with hot water or a hair dryer?

He gets to tell me “try to be careful next time” which such a tone because he knows he’s provided immeasurably valuable information to me. He can point at me and talk like to me because of what he did for me with this information 😆🤣😆 funny enough I remember walking in early to a body shop I was getting work done at and I saw a guy using some machine to heat the bumper up then he just used another device to round it out just like this but my uninitiated mind didn’t even process how this could be a DYI at home.

I had a dent like this in Atlanta, drove my car to Florida, and let it sit for a few weeks, and the dent came out by itself lol
