BURN IT DOWN! Insurance Will Cover It.

Seamus is stuck in jail after that surveillance misunderstanding, but he still manages to find himself in one of the many protest-turned-riots that have been happening all over the US this year. The rioters and their supporters brush off the consequences of their destructive behavior with the cavalier claim that “insurance will cover it.” But even leaving aside the fact that that’s definitely NOT how insurance works, riots have other, long-term effects that no insurance plan, no matter how comprehensive, could possibly cover.

You also have to realize that in addition to the costs of rebuilding and the increased cost of insurance, the business owner will have no source of income during the weeks or months it’ll take to rebuild, and will be unable to pay employees.

Something else I try to point out the people who give the "it's okay, insurance will cover it, " argument. Even if the insurance covered everything, which they don't, does that make it right? If you had full medical insurance, so you never have to pay a dime to any doctor for anything, would that make it alright for me to just break your leg?
Oh, but that's different.
Yeah, you'd be in physical pain if I broken your leg. But the business owners would feel significant emotional pain watching what they put years of their lives into building be destroyed. Blood sweat and tears spent on it, gone.
And with a broken leg, you might be unable to work and earn a living. And the business owners would be out of a source of income the whole time of the clean up, reconstruction, and restocking of their business. They still have to eat. They still have bills to pay. Insurance sure won't cover that.
So even in the most idealized situation, this does nothing but hurt.

*"A fire broke out backstage in a theatre. The clown came out to warn the public; they thought it was a joke and applauded. He repeated it; the acclaim was even greater. I think that's just how the world will come to an end: to general applause from wits who believe it's a joke."*

My mom sells insurance. I asked her about the rioting.
She told me outright that Insurance Companies might not cover riots if they feel the business owner didn't properly prepare for it.

It's almost like there is a concerted effort to eliminate small businesses.

The very fact that it's acceptable to defend looting these days says a lot about these times...

I had a discussion with my brother. Love him to death but my sister in law has turned him into lefty. He was telling me all about how the riots are just black people trying to have their voices heard and the usual talking points. I rebutted to him that “These riots are not only disproportionately effecting black neighborhoods but black owned businesses as well. Most of the business when they’re not making money, they’re losing money and so are the people that work for them and even if they have insurance they’re still not going to want to reopen just to have their businesses burned down again and their employees are going to seek work elsewhere in something more secure. Not only that but local taxes will be raised to help rebuild the destroyed infrastructure and that will hurt these people even more until finally the inevitable happens and what may have once been a decent place to live turns into a run down shit hole that will be stuck like that for decades” His didn’t have much of a good response to that.

Insurance agent here, you're exactly correct.

I had a person on Twitter claim to be an insurance agent make this argument about insurance paying for it. I laughed when he claimed I didn’t know how it works...given I’ve actually been an insurance agent. He fell silent...obviously.

The idea that insurance would pay for it, and that this won’t impact those most marginalized is beyond naive.

The fact that we even need a video like that to know the message is a shame itself
