Panasonic gives users so much video features, if they’d give us a new autofocus system they would gain a lot of marketshare.

I think the autofocus is WAY better than before!

Thinking about switching from my A7iii for the S5. Mainly for the extra features and flip screen. Cant afford the A7Siii and likely the new A74 will be out of my price range. The sony is not perfect at focusing at times either as much as folks make out and because of that most of my filming is done in manual, so no loss switching to an S5. Good price for the S5 and the 20-60 lens kit if I sell my A7iii just now before new version comes out.

I think with kit lens it's 95% there, it has some pulsing but if you actually watch your face and don't lock in on the background you don't notice it. My take on the S5 is that I would use it's DBDFAF for youtube videos, music videos (but with lots of takes), wedding videos, corporate b roll but would not use it for narrative, conferences or interviews.

I really think Panasonic has done a fantastic job with their colors. People have always mentioned Canon or Fuji, but Panasonic looks awesome.

For a camera that is using a DFD focusing system, I am so impressed by the autofocus...Im satisfied

Thanks for the video. I've been filming with manual focus for years. But I have to say that the autofocus has improved since the new update. I myself now have the Panasonic S1 for a few months. Beautiful camera. I now do video filming with the Sony FS5. It is also slow with autofocus, but as said, I do everything manually.

Thank you so much for this video mate! i'm so much in a limbo right now between the S5 and A7iii. I thimk it would be a better idea to buy new systems and sacrifice the Autofocus for the time being. You convinced me with Panasonic!

Nice video and you make some good points. I always go for the latest camera release as an investment. So naturally went for the S5. It should arrive tomorrow hopefully.

I am not a fanboy of any brand, but when you changed the camera, the sony colors look better: skin tone, the color of your clothes, the tree trunk and the leaves, in your video more points in favor of Sony and I'm not talking about the autofocus. Was your sony at Scinetone? Did you use ninja v on it? Thank you very much for your comparison and for taking the job. Very informative. Go ahead good man

Hi Pav, thanks again for video.
I have an S5 and after 2.0 firmware upgrade I felt AFC improvement when shooting in Vlog and also improved AFC with the Sigma 35mm 1.4 but cannot quantify, just an overall feeling.

Also loved in this update:
.the AF+MF now also in video,
.the AF single point/human detection combined
.Shuter angle...

Panasonic somehow keeps surprising us! I think for DFD with the KIT lens seems to follow better with this update. So many great new features, it's like getting a new camera for free :) I'm with you however and I prefer manual focus! Been using the GH series for years so I have certainly learned MF better than ever! Since I haven't yet been able to get an S5 in my hands, I must ask...

with the lesser quality EVF in the S5, do you find it difficult to manually focus with the Sigma 85mm @ 1.4? Maybe in comparison with the EVF on a GH5 or G9??

Just a quick correction. The red record frame was already in the original version of the firmware, but it wasn't turned on by default. You had to go find it and switch it on.

I enjoy your reviews very much. Down to earth.

I have pretty much done the same as you today Pav except my ‘other’ lens is currently the Sigma 56mm f1.4 and it’s about as ‘reliable’ as your 85mm f1.4! I do have the Panasonic 85mm f1.8 that you previously tested on it’s way so look forward to that. Otherwise how are you setting up your AF in regard to speed and sensitivity?

as i read the panasonic site, the AF-improvement is for firmware update of S1(S5 AF improvements for the S1). the S5 got "only" some extra features (prores raw, cine 4k, vectorscope...).
to fix the SIGMA auto (de)focusing, as it is written on the panasonic support site, you have to update from the SIGMA support site. only LUMIX lenses are controlled and enhanced by panasonic firmware in camera... these may all be misunderstanding of what i read??? i downloaded the 1.1 and 2.0 for S5 but haven't installed it yet... and i only could test the 20-60mm LUMIX lens because i'm still waiting for the SIGMA lens (45mm)... :-(

In my own opinion the Panasonic S5 is like the full frame Panasonic GH4, Panasonic G85, Panasonic GX8, Panasonic G7, and Canon 80D and Canon 90D and Canon C100 Mark 2 rolled into one as it can do unlimited recording in 8 bit 4K and HD 1080p. In both Full Frame and Super 35.

Thank you for the video.
Panasonic is so close to creating a desirable perfect camera for me. Consider how new they are in Full Frame market, I think they are really doing a great job with their S line camera.
I wish they will eventually come up with a S1/S5 mark II with some form of phase detection auto focus. I would switch instantly from a7III
On the other hand, if a7IV has similar specs to Lumix S5, I will be settled with Sony for a long time.

Great video. Which auto focus setting where you using for tests? One point, eye focus, whole area?
