In May 1862, Smalls, who was working as a deckhand and pilot on a Confederate transport ship called the CSS Planter, made a daring escape. Late one night, when the white crew members were ashore, Smalls and several enslaved crew members, along with their families, commandeered the ship. Disguising himself as the ship's captain, Smalls navigated the Planter out of Charleston Harbor and safely delivered it to Union forces blockading the coast. #blackhistorymonth

I had the privilege of commissioning the army logistics, support vessel LSV 8 Major General, Robert Smalls. He was a true American hero. I would like to be the first to nominate him to be on the one dollar bill. If anyone’s interested in more of my experience and milestones on the vessel, just say so.

I'm laughing at the fact that idiots made it so easy for him.
