When I need inspiration, motivation, or I find myself doubting myself I look to the story of this man.

A true hero and it’s a grave disservice that this was not taught to me in public school nor college.

Didn’t learn about him to until a year ago. Robert Smalls is in the highest tier of exceptional Americans and it’s stories like his that make me proud to be one.

The colored troops were vital to later battles of the war true enough, but fredrick Douglas and need of more recruits did more to convince Lincoln to allow black soldiers than this guy did. Not to mention Sherman and Hunter
