Not If, But How Artificial Intelligence Might Take Over the World | Hugh Baillie | TEDxISKL

Hugh Baillie, a technologically-driven student at the International School of Kuala Lumpur, explores Artificial Intelligence and the greater impact it may have on our life.

Born in Australia, Hugh lived there for 7 years before becoming an expat by moving to Singapore, where he surrounded himself with new age technology in a developed city. He spent a further 5 years of his life there before moving to Malaysia and began attending the International School of Kuala Lumpur. Having always been technologically driven, Hugh aims to discuss the way Artificial Intelligence is heading and how it might have a far greater impact on our life then we might expect.

Good for Hugh for getting up on stage and working to articulate ideas that matter to him. He's not a great presenter yet, but the way you become one is by having the courage to put yourself out there.

Immortality for the rich. Extinction for the rest of us...

I'm glad the camera operator knows that what's important here is to remain tightly focused on the speaker and following his every move. Rather than letting us get all confused and discombobulated by showing us the slides on the screen the speaker has on display.

Even with Artificial General Intelligence, those self checkouts will still be impossible to use properly.

while it's taking over the world, could it please match the audio volume of opening sequences with the content? thanks.

Take a chill pill and just live a happy basic life and stop thinking about everything

The best part of the talk was when he walked off the red carpet circle... and the camera guy freaked out! ;)

Yes except how can we be ready? We could prepare ourselves if we knew what to expect but not when we have no idea what is about to hit us.

2:15 "is More than a billion people to manage and without AI we simply couldn't do it"

I think you are confusing AI with computers in general, not every computer is an Intelligent computer, John McCarthy didnt say that all computers are AIs, but that AI is the process to make smart systems, using computers.

You can manage huge amount of informations without AI, with simple, non intelligent, programs.

Also, he is terribly informed about what AGI is, a non general purpose AI already might be able to answer questions without the need of programming them in it already, that is not the point of General AI. and it has nothing to do with mimicking the brain, that is called a neural network and could be both General AI and non General AI.

Funny how articulate means something different for a human speaker and a robot arm.

TED better deploy AI cameraman for "walker presenter" who doesn't know the explicit rule of "red circle carpet". 😄

When we have AGI, why would we still have supermarkets?

Well I actually have worked in this field off and on since 1990. Strong AI or SAI  (not AGI) is a surprisingly difficult problem. A consciousness based SAI is possible - my own project could have had a working machine by maybe 2005 or 2010 if it had been funded. The biggest problems are all very low level stuff - things like memory management and encapsulation and data object design. Another problem is that SAI is suited to a hybrid analogue digital architecture that constantly injects a dribble of noise at every step, like the brain. Maybe an even bigger problem is that the brain shows every evidence of using quantum mechanics. There is also a central design requirement for self awareness called 'synchronisation' which turns the whole machine into a carefully balanced real time system - intelligence doesn't simply scale with processing capacity, plus the interface needs to be a real time robot system.

Just can’t watch to the end... They need an experienced talker for this topic, as I can’t take this talk serious

I look forward to using AGI to take over the world.
