How to start up a new koi pond/filter (avoid new pond syndrome)

This is my tried and tested method for starting up a new koi pond and filter whilst avoiding new pond syndrome. I have honed this technique over some 25 years keeping koi and starting many different ponds. In this video I take you, step by step, through my own method for starting, seeding and maturing a new filter system, quickly and safely.

The critical information you need when starting a new filter is how much ammonia is toxic to your koi and yet many people don't know what that level is or how to calculate it. I'll tell you exactly how to find this out for your specific pond water and how to use this information to safely navigate this potentially tricky process.

SODIUM THIOSULPHATE - 1 teaspoon of crystals will neutralise 1000 litres of tap water. You can make up a solution and pour it over the pond surface or on to your air bubbles for good distribution. It is safe even if you overdose it. It can also be used to neutralise PP. Be aware that a small amount of ammonia is released when chloramine is neutralised with SS but it is a very small amount. I get it from ebay, 99% pure, for around £5.85 for a kilogram.

I have been struggling with the ammonia test for a few weeks was getting worried put its all ok as I used your pH graph and am OK I keep my eye on it but so happy now plus I clean my filters every day now not a deep clean just a quick one cheer keep up the good work
