Is brushing around seedlings really that important? In today’s video, Jason takes you through his seedling maintenance routine, clearing brush around his young trees using a @Stihl 131 weed wacker. 🌱 This crucial process prevents brush and other competing vegetation from overtaking the seedlings, which can lead to poor growth or even death.

Join Jason as he shares his experience using the @Stihl 131 and provides valuable insights from his 4-year journey of growing seedlings. Every season brings new challenges, and Jason enjoys passing on the knowledge he’s gained to help others start and grow a thriving forest! If you're interested in reforestation, forestry management, or just love learning about sustainable practices, this is the video for you.

Sometimes the trees "need" to struggle, they will grow faster, grow straighter. Like in a mature forest environment. In the upper midwest, tubes for young trees are a death sentence, Japanese beetles go into the tubes, don't fly out and eat till nothing is left and attract more into the tube. Tubes are for taller trees with the crown ABOVE the tube. Small trees get caged. I've learned the hard way. Been planting trees for 40 years.

Check out the mulching tool that can attach to the weedeater/brush cutter. I think Oregon makes one and I can’t remember the brand I’d bought years ago. Might be easier than the blade you’re running. Work more from the top down/chopping motion works slick.

Blackberries are a pain to deal with, and all the ferns growing in that plot really does a number on the seedlings as well. Looks like that blade means business. I use a triangle blade on my weed wacker, as that will also deal with unwanted saplings up to about 2" diameter. Your harness needs adjusting. The square plate on your right side is meant to rest on your hip, just below the hipbone. Give it a try. I am certain your shoulders and upper back will send me kind thoughts afterwards 🙂 Take care and thanks for the video.

Sometimes the thing to do is clear cut first? Eliminate all of the stuff you're now cutting down with your wacker. Lay down a 4' x 4' weed barrier centered over each tree. Maybe use a 2 year old bare root? Thanks Jason.

It's hard to tell but can you maybe use a self-propelled trimmer mower to knock down a majority of the brush, then come in with the weedeater for final cleanup?

you may want to put it on your calendar to walk out around here once a month my guy.... those weeds don't come on as fast as bugs and bacteria do. Jason was mining gold and separating it, and trees stuff too. I swear. If you met jason 5 years ago he learned how to make youtubes, he learned how to do it wrong, and then found the right way to do it. He has changed his mining procedures just as much. he was carrying bags at first now he has carts with good wheels and blasting a way to make the whole path shorter. I swear inn 5 years, Im gonna be watching these videos, and Jason is going to be explaining particle physics, and a month after that, Jason is going to be explaining particle physics the correct way!!! have you considered going out to see parker on his gold mine or any of those guys? i bet they need some shaker tables

Isn’t that kind of underpowered for longevity of that tool?

Use half a 5 gallon bucket on a stick to protect the seedlings and use glyphosate, triclopyr, and a surfactant to release spray. I sprayed a unit with a similar mix just off Old Day Cr Rd this fall.

I don’t know much about this but can’t you grow the trees in a more protected spot for three years and then transplant them to their permanent location? This brushing job looks like a real pain and not very effective.
