"Heartbeat" is a smooth and funky R&B track performed by the American funk band The Dazz Band. Released in 1984 as part of their album "Jukebox," this song represents the evolving sound of funk and R&B in the mid-1980s.
The Dazz Band, known for their earlier hit "Let It Whip," brings their signature blend of funk, soul, and electronic elements to "Heartbeat." The track features a pulsating rhythm that mimics a heartbeat, cleverly tying into the song's title and theme. This rhythmic foundation is layered with synthesizers, smooth guitar licks, and horn sections characteristic of the band's sound.
Lyrically, "Heartbeat" explores themes of love and desire, with the vocals delivered in a passionate yet smooth style that complements the song's overall mood. The track showcases the band's ability to create danceable grooves while maintaining a sense of romantic appeal.
While not as commercially successful as some of their earlier hits, "Heartbeat" exemplifies The Dazz Band's evolution and adaptation to the changing musical landscape of the 1980s. It incorporates more electronic elements compared to their earlier, more traditional funk sound, reflecting the increasing influence of synthesizers and drum machines in R&B music of that era.
"Heartbeat" continues to be appreciated by fans of 80s funk and R&B, serving as a testament to The Dazz Band's enduring musical legacy and their contribution to the genre's development during a time of significant change in popular music.

From the merger of Mother Braintree and Bell Telefunk out of Cleveland, OH. to form Kinsman Dazz and eventually The Dazz Band. Even though they tied with Earth Wind & fire for a Grammy with the song “Let It Whip” in my humble opinion they were very UNDERRATED!!!
