Om Shanti means “eternal peace for all of mankind.” As a Hindu we are told that it is achieved only when a soul reaches moksha, the divine release from the endless cycle of reincarnation after living a righteous and pious life. It is always chanted thrice here because we believe when it is chanted for the first time it purifies the body of sufferings, diseases and discomfort. When it is chanted for the second time it relieves the mind of negative feelings, worries, stress and tensions. Chanting it third time heightens the spiritual experience and touch the soul of person from within.
In other sense, it is chanted thrice for Oneself, immediate family and friends and the peace of all beings in universe at large.
Once chanted thrice it removes all three classes of obstacle from the three realms, that is physical, divine and internal realm.
